2 CITY I LIKE… There are a lot of cities beautiful and fine. But the city I like best Is, out of doubt mine It’s Stary Oskol. INTRODUCTION Everyone has the place to live,which with special force attracts heart, keeps in the depths unprecedented treasures and it’s native. Such place is Stary Oskol City.It’s our native city we like. And we want to tell you about it. The past First of all we want to tell a bout it history. Stary Oskol is the center of Starooskol area was situated on southern boundary of Moscow State. Once in these territories our ancestors had heavy fight against the tsar Fyodor. Oskol City was based in 1596 on command of tsar Fyodor Ivannovich as one of the fortresses for protection of Russian State. The city-fortress has inherited the name of Oskol river. The addition “Stary” Oskol has received in 1655. The fortress was repeatedly ruined and restored. Around of it there were many various settlements.In XX century the city has appeared in the middle war events of the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War.

3 The coat of arms is an insignia, an emblem of various symbols. It reflects historical traditions and has received the greatest distribution in Middle Ages. The coat of arms was given to Stary Oskol in 1780. It is a field from two parts. The first part is a red field as symbol of courage, with the coat of arms of Belgorod region and the gun. The second part is a green field,as symbol of hope, with the gold wooden plough, as symbol of riches. As the military instrument, the gun, and the field instrument, the wooden plough are united as the residents were the ancient soldiers. Nowadays During three centuries Oskol was small deaf city of merchants. Handicraft workers and fairs.But the industry grew and developed. And in the middle of XX century the city was renewed. And today Stary Oskol is a big administrative centre of Starooskol area.It is located in the north-east of Belgorod region. Starooskol territory is one of the richest regions of Kursk Magnetic Anomaly. The population is 220 th people.Our city is young and old. It’s more than 400 years old. The native residents conditionally divide the city on three parts and slobods. The slobods are : Kazatskaya, Pushkarskaya, Streletskaya and Ezdotskata. In Central park there are many old buildings. For last years they were reconstructed, but their shape isn’t changed. The most beautiful and the youngest is Northeastern park The are many new micro-districts and high buildings in it.The native residents call it ‘’New City’’ or ‘’City of Metallurgist’’ Our city is surrounded by the forests. There are Oskol and Ublya rivers near it. South western part especially is clean and green in spring and in summer.

4 SIGHTS There are many sights in Stary Oskol. The temples in. Russia are the keepers of thousand-year history of Russian church. It was confirmed by prays and work of religious people. Stary Oskol is city of rich spiritual traditions. There are many churches and temples in it. The churches are : Kazatskya. Streletskaya, zdotskaya and so on. The temples are: Svyato- Nickolsky, Voznesensky, and so on. Today many of churches are regenerating and building. The construction of ‘’God’s Mother’’ chapel was built at Svyato-Nickolsky temple in ‘’ honour of it icon in 2005 by religious people. There are different ways of travelling city. The most popular ways of travelling in Stary Oskol are: buses, cars, trains, bikes. They are convenient, comfortable and fast. We are proud of our tram lines. We have some favorite places in our city. They are special places for children,you and grown-ups. There are 38 Schools, 4 Schools of arts, 2 School of aesthetics,3 uncial schools,2 Palaces of culture, the House of culture,3 Departmental clubs.2 Centres of children’s and youthful creativity,2 Cinemas (“Bul” and “Oktyabr” ), 9 Swimming pools, 2 Stadiums, sport halls, Computer clubs, Reading rooms, banks,parks and cafes. For last years the city a appreciably grows. In Stary Oskol are opened some Universities, Metallyrgical and Cooperative technical school, Geological technical school,Medicial and pedagogical colleges.

5 The history of city is inseparablly from the biography by people in their living. Staty Oskol is native of writer Vasily Eroshenko and putstanding musician Michail Eredenko. There is a monument to Eroshenko in the Obuhovka village near the city. One of the school of art is called in honour of Erdenko. There are many monuments to heroes who died for our happy life during World War II. Near the cinema “Byl” there is a monument to Zhucov. There are monuments near the railway station and Atamansky forest. By the way, there is a Natural Museum in our city, where you can find many exhibits of World War II. The Natural museum is private residence of merchant Lihushin. In 1942 the museum was, suffered from bombardment and was opened again after city’s liberation in May 1943. We have also a Drama Theatre and Museum of Fine Arts, where our painters demonstrate their works. The Drama theatre was created by it manage Oleg Labozin in February, 1st, 1996. It is entered in the register of Russia state theatres and consists in the World association of theatres for children and youth. Here also traditionally are held the creative evenings of our poets, musicians and performances.

6 INDUSTRY Stary Oskol – is the large centre of Metallogical industry in Belgorod region. Today there are 28 large industrial concerns in Stary Oskol. There is a famous giant of metallurgical plant “Oskol electrometallurgical Kombinat” in it. At the end of 70th years of present century the city has gone through literally new birth with construction of OEMK. It is one of the modern steel mills in Russia and the only one among the biggest steel works using the technology of direct iron reduction. The mill is located in the proximity of the iron ore deposits, which from a part of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly. The construction of the mill commenced made in 1982. In 1983 first module of Direct Reduction Plant was put into operation and in 1986-first group of finishing stands of Rolling Mill 700. In 1993 OEMK was re-organized into the Joint Stock Company. Advanced producting technology, modern equipment, high professional level of the personal allow OEMK to produce steel being much in demand in Russia and abroad. And Main advantages of OEMK Metal product are: high technological dustility of steel during hot and cold deformations, high steel purity in terms of residual elements content and detrimental impurities is conditioned by use of metallized pellets in steel making. process, controlled hardenability, low content of non-metallic inclusions in steel, long service life guarantee at increased temperatures and so on. The products are certified. The concerns of machine-building are: Mechanical and Cement factories, factory of Motor and electric equipments, Joint Stock Company “Kanat”. One of the leaders of Russia food industry is Confectionery factory “Slavyanka”. The large modern dairy plant “Avida” quickly develops. The bakery satisfies all needs of population. CONCLUSION Stary Oskol is the ancient and young city grows and dynamicaly develops in spite of general economic difficulties.
