7 Get This! During cellular respiration, oxygen is used while carbon dioxide is being produced. For every mole of oxygen used one mole of carbon dioxide is produced. Thus, if respiration proceeds in a closed system the volume of gas will remain constant even though the composition of the gas changes. If the carbon dioxide is removed, the volume of gas will decrease. The amount of the decrease will reflect the amount of carbon dioxide given off as well as the amount of oxygen used during respiration. We will make use of this information to measure the overall rate of respiration in plant material (seeds) and animal material (worms). OO

8 EXPERIMENT Keeping this information in mind. Two test tubes were set up. One containing the worms and one containing the seeds. As the organisms respired the carbon dioxide was removed and measured. Carbon Dioxide

9 RESULTS The respirometers were used to measure the use of oxygen under the following conditions: Seeds and worms at 20 C Seeds and worms at 30 C

10 Questions: Which respired more rapidly, the seeds or the worms? How does temperature affect respiration rates in cold blooded animals and plants? If you conducted the experiment in the dark would you expect different results? How could you prove that carbon dioxide is given off during respiration? How would changes in temperature (either warmer or cooler) affect respiration in a warm-blooded animal?
