What is history? It is a record of past actions of humankind, based on surviving evidence. (Stories of the past.) What is our connection to history? 6 needs common to all people at all times & in all places (called the Universal Culture Pattern): –need to make a living –need for law & order –need for social organization –need for knowledge & learning –need for self-expression –need for religious expression
What is culture? It is a way of life of a human group. What is civilization? It is a culture that has writing & counting, cities with large structures, political organization, & occupational specialization.
How is time recorded in history? Century = period of 100 yrs; denoted by C 1st C = nd C = st C = Question: In what century is the year 1789? Answer: 18th B.C. = Before Christ (also B.C.E. = Before Common Era); letters appear after the year ex. Sumer was created 3500 B.C. A.D. = anno domini (Latin for In the year of our Lord); letters appear before the yr ex. It is currently A.D (Note: if there are no letters, it is A.D.)
