2 J. Jackson a friend of the “common man”  Jackson born in backwoods settlement  Known for fighting, dueling, and drinking  Supported vote to all men (not just property owners)  Became a hero after victory at Battle of New Orleans

3 A. “Aristocracy” ended  When Jackson was elected, said he would end the “aristocracy”  Aristocracy is rule by a few “best qualified” men  With Jackson, the “common man” would have a say

4 C. Creation of universal manhood suffrage  Any adult male could now vote, not just those who owned a large estate

5 K. Kept vetoing U.S. Bank  Jackson hated Hamilton’s national bank and used the veto to stop it from being re-chartered  He felt bank was a tool of the rich aristocrats  He called it a “Monster”

6 S. Spoils system begun  Spoils system: giving public offices to loyal party members  Jackson rewarded Democratic Party members with government offices “To the winner goes the spoils”

7 O. Opposed “nullification”  South Carolina claimed it could “nullify” federal laws it did not support and secede from the union  Jackson threatened force and to “crush and hang” all the traitors “Our Federal Union: It MUST be preserved!” --Andrew Jackson
