1 ACTIVITY – 3 UNDERSTAND THE VARIOUS COMMON ELEMENTS OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM BRIDGE COURSE of INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

2 07/09/13 Agenda of this activity Describe basic functions of an Operating System. Describe the parts of window's Desktop environment. Make the use windows Start Menu. Effectively use windows applet like media player, calculator etc. Describe the various tool bars of Windows OS.

3 What is an Operating System AN OPERATING SYSTEM IS A COLLECTION OF SOFTWARES THAT MANAGE COMPUTER AND THEIR HARDWARE RESOURCES AND PROVIDES COMMON SERVICES FOR COMPUTER PROGRAME.

5 Purpose of an Operating System Our computer cannot work with out an Operating System. Operating System acts as intermediater between us and the physical parts of the computer (screen, keyboard, hard disk, printer,...), making it easier to handle. For example, there is no need for us to know exactly in what part of the hard disk we have saved a certain document we created, the operating systems takes care of it.

9 What we see when we start computer-Desktop The Desktop is the on-screen work area on which windows appears.

10 What is an Icon On the desktop we have icons that allow us to open the corresponding program. For example, by clicking on the icon internet Explorer will open up.

11 The Bars and Start Button Task Bar. The task bar is what appears on the bottom of the screen. On the bottom left corner there is the Start button. Next we have the area for shortcuts, then the programs running, and lastly the notification area. In windows the Task Bar looks like as shown below:-

12 Start Button:- The Start Button is the button through which we can access the entire breadth of options that Windows XP offers us.

13 07/09/13 Title Bar:- The title bar contains the name of the program you are working with (Notepad) as shown in the picture below:- The minimize button shrinks the window The maximize amplifies the size of the window to the whole screen. The restore button restores the window to its original state. The close button closes the window.

14 07/09/13 Tool Bar, Scroll Bars, Status Bar The tool bar contains icons to immediatelly execute some of the most often used commands. The scroll bars allow us to move through out the page in a quick and simple manner. Simply drag the bar with the mouse or click on the arrows. The status bar is used to give the user certain information.This information varies depending on the window that is opened at the time.

15 Windows explorer The Windows Explorer is the File Manager. Through it we can delete, see, copy, or move files and folders. Open the Explorer as follows: Click on Start Select All programs Select Accessories Select Windows Explorer

21 The Recycle Bin The Recycle Bin a space reserved to store information that is deleted so that in the event of deleting a file or folder by mistake it is possible to get it back
