2 Activate Prior Knowledge You already know what synonyms and antonyms are and how to use context to determine the meaning of unknown words. 4 Concept Development So whats the big picture? When you apply knowledge of synonyms and antonyms you can tell what new words mean. You may not know what a word means but you can examine the answer choices as synonyms or antonyms of the word and see if they fit:

5 Importance It is important to use synonyms and antonyms to determine the meaning of unknown words because: 1. We can sometimes learn new words as we read them without using a dictionary. 2.
