7 Function of metadata Whether in the traditional context or in the Internet context, the key purpose of metadata is to facilitate and improve the retrieval of information. We have learnt to measure information retrieval in terms of recall and precision. If we miss a lot of relevant information, we have poor recall. If we get flooded by a lot of irrelevant information, we have poor precision.

8 Metadata ICA [Geo-spatial] metadata are data that describe the content, data definition and structural representation, extent (both geographic and temporal), spatial reference, quality, availability, status and administration of a geographic dataset.

26 Townplans in The Netherlands The resulting table, because of its length, does not give a good general outline of the situation. Therefor we decided to construct two maps, one for the coverage of the municipalities and one for the coverage of publishers. It took some time before Simone Meijer, our trainee, had converted an administrative map of The Netherlands from Atlas Gis to Aldus Freehand 3.1. The next stage took some days -amongst others a conversion to Paint Shop Pro to create.GIF files- but the resulting choropleth and distribution maps satisfied our expectations bibliography.
