Why Do We Have Poverty? If there were an easy way to answer this question, we probably wouldnt have any poverty at all! Societies and economies are complicated. When one part of an economic system changes, if affects many other things.
Why Do We Have Poverty? For example, if a business shuts down, then people lose their jobs. Sometimes people can find new jobs right away. But if they cant, then they might get caught in the poverty cycle.
Why Do We Have Poverty? A cycle is when the same events keep happening over again, with the same results. Once you have reached the point where you dont have enough income to meet your basic needs, it is hard to get what you need to improve your life.
The Poverty Cycle Example 1: People living with poverty often have health problems because they cant afford healthy food, regular dental care, and warm clothing. If you are not healthy, it is hard to work. If you cant work, it is hard to earn a living.
The Poverty Cycle Example 2: People living with poverty might not be able to afford the things they need in order to look for work. If you dont have a car and cant afford to take the bus, you might not be able to get to job interviews.
Breaking the Poverty Cycle It is not impossible to break the poverty cycle. People do it all the time. One way out of the poverty cycle is to get training or further education to improve your job skills. Although education after high school costs money, there are programs to help people pay for it (scholarships, loans, etc).
Breaking the Poverty Cycle Its also easier to break the poverty cycle when people work together to help one another. Ex: Habitat for Humanity Textbook Time! Page 56
