Why We Are Not Campbellites

Why Campbellites? Name-calling may come about through ignorance, prejudice, slander, or malice (Mt. 11:18-19; 12:24) Campbellite was used as early as the 1830s Campbellite is used prejudicially by Baptists and others today (see Campbellism: Its History and Heresies, Bob L. Ross, 1973)

Why We Are Not Campbellites First, there were others who wanted to be NT Christians before the Alexander Campbell, who came to America in 1809 – A church of Christ was formed in England in 1669 – Barton W. Stone and the Cane Ridge church of Christ, 1802 – Church of Christ, 1807, appears on William Rogers tombstone at Cane Ridge, KY

Why We Are Not Campbellites Second, Alexander Campbell was associated with the Baptists from 1813 to 1830, not NT Christians – Campbell was not looking to start a denomination called the Church of Christ

Why We Are Not Campbellites Third, name just one belief or practice that we have today that came from Alexander Campbell and not from the New Testament – Our standard for belief and practice is the New Testament alone (Mt. 17:5; Rom. 6:17; 1 Cor. 11:1-2; 2 Thess. 2:15; 2 Tim. 1:13)

Why We Are Not Campbellites Fourth, Alexander Campbell believed and practiced things that were wrong – He belonged to Associations – He was the first president of the American Christian Missionary Society

Why We Are Not Campbellites Fifth, if some Churches of Christ trace their roots to Alexander Campbell, they are wrong to do so, and we do not have fellowship with them – 2 John 9-11

Why We Are Not Campbellites Sixth, we follow Jesus Christ, not Alexander Campbell – We follow Jesus, not the words of Alexander Campbell in The Christian System (Mt. 16:18; Acts 2:37; Eph. 1:22-23) – We follow the principle of restoration, but not the restorer himself (Josiah, 2 Kings 22-23; Hezekiah, 2 Chron. 29-31; Ezra & Nehemiah, Neh. 8)

Why We Are Not Campbellites Finally, we do not wear the name Campbellite – Alexander Campbell rejected this name (Millennial Harbinger, Vol. 1; No. 3; Page 118, March 1830) – Raccoon John Smith rejected this name (1831) – We are Christians only (Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1 Pet. 4:16), and members of local churches of Christ (Rom. 16:16)

We Are Christians Only We resist the urge to follow anyone but Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 1:10-13) We resist the urge to lead others; Jesus Christ is the only leader (3 Jn. 9; Col. 1:18) We resist the urge to plant any seed other than the word of God (Mt. 13:19; 15:13)
