1 CLCG Evaluation 2004 Center for Language and Cognition, Groningen Faculty of Arts Syntax and Semantics Group Program Leader: Jan Koster

2 Research in Semantics Regular Faculty ● Co Vet, Arie Molendijk: French ● Alice ter Meulen, Angeliek van Hout: English ● Jack Hoeksema, Victor Sanchez-Valencia, Frans Zwarts: Dutch ● Petra Hendriks: Artificial Intelligence Postdocs and Graduate Students ● Bart Hollebrandse, Ton van der Wouden, Anastasia Giannakidou, Jennifer Spenader, Joost Zwarts, Gerlof Bouma, Erik-Jan Smits

3 Research in Syntax Regular Faculty ● Germen de Haan, Olaf Koeneman: Frisian ● Ron van Zonneveld: Dutch ● Jan Koster, Jan-Wouter Zwart: General Linguistics ● Reineke Bok-Bennema, Brigitte Kampers-Manhe: Romance Postdocs and Graduate Students ● Janneke ter Beek, Lily Grozeva, Liefke Reitsma, Paulien Rijkhoek, Mark de Vries

4 Research Themes in Semantics ● Negation and Polarity (Zwarts, Hoeksema, Van der Wouden, Giannakidou) ● Tense and Aspect (Ter Meulen, Molendijk, Vet, van Hout, Hollebrandse, Zwarts) ● Interpretation and Optimality Theory (Hendriks, Spenader, Bouma)

5 Research Themes in Syntax ● Foundations of Syntactic Theory (Koeneman, Koster, De Vries, Zwart) ● Word Order (Verb Movements, Tense, Scope: Bok-Bennema, De Haan, Kampers-Manhe, Koeneman, Koster, Van Zonneveld, Zwart) ● Parallel Structure and Parataxis (Koster, De Vries, Zwart)

6 Main Results Semantics ● More finegrained classification of polarity items ● Extensive database with usage information on polarity items ● Formal account of aspectuality in a dynamic setting ● Better understanding of the acquisition path of tense and aspect ● New applications of Optimality Theory in the semantics/pragmatics area, esp. anaphora and ellipsis

7 Main Results Syntax ● Variable-free theory of syntactic dependencies ● Elaboration of Kayne’s antisymmetry theory ● New theory of word order parametrization based on massive pied piping, partial movement and scope ● Better understanding of verb movements (clusters, verb second, partial movement) ● Theory about parallel structure (coordination, extrapositions, etc.) and parataxis

8 Plans for the Future ● Continuation of the main themes ● With more emphasis on the use of corpus data and computational implementation (Semantics), formalization (Syntax) and publication in the form of monographs (Semantics and Syntax) ● And integration with current work in psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics (ERP and fMRI studies)
