1 OPAVA Autorem materiálu a všech jeho částí, není-li uvedeno jinak, je Mgr. Soňa Quisová. Střední škola hotelnictví a služeb a Vyšší odborná škola, Opava, příspěvková organizace. 2 Opava – basic facts • Opava is a statutory town • has about 60 thousand inhabitants • lies on the Opava river about 260 m above sea level • it has a few suburbs (Kateřinky, Jaktař, Kylešovice) and urban parts (Komárov, Malé Hoštice, etc.) • nicknames: White Opava, Opava of Petr Bezruč obr. 1

3 Opava – history • the first written evidence about the existence of the settlement comes from 1195 • it was given the town rights by Přemysl Otakar I in 1224 • Opava became the seat of the Royal Mint in the 13th century • it became a princedom at the beginning of the 14th century • Opava was occupied by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years´ War obr.2 the coat of arms of Opava

4 • Opava became the residence of regional authorities for Silesia in the 18th century • it was a district town of Silesia from 1782 to 1928 • Opava became a part of Germany after the Munich agreement • the town was liberated in April 1945 by the Red Army, most of the town was destroyed in fights obr. 4 old postcards of Opava obr. 3

5 Opava – historical sights The town hall – Hláska • in the Upper Square • built in 1618 • with a watch tower – open to public – nice views of the surrounding and Opava • the tower was originally wooden but destroyed by a gale • it used to house the museum and the archives • a theatre on the first floor • the seat of town authorities now obr. 5

6 The Silesian Museum • founded in 1814 • the oldest in the Czech Republic and Central Europe • collections of animals, plants, minerals, coins, prehistory, etc. obr. 6

7 The Silesian Theatre • in the Upper square • the construction began in May 1804, opened a year later • burnt down in 1909 • reconstructed many times • the reconstructions of the interiors from 2010 to 2011 • we can see dramas, operas, musicals and ballet there obr. 7

8 The palaces the Blűcher Palace – built in the Baroque style on the site of a noble house • situated in Masarykova street, the Department of Nature Study of the Silesian Museum now the Sobek Palace – built in the Baroque style with a painted portrait of Black Madona with a baby • situated in Masarykova street • the seat of a forest company now obr. 8 obr. 9

9 The churches The Church of Virgin Mary Assumption • a very significant Gothic sight built of bricks • in the centre of town • built in the 14th century on a site of a Romanesque church • with two towers – one not finished, the other with a Baroque cupola • declared a National cultural sight • the interior was decorated in the Baroque style obr. 10

10 The Church of the Holy Spirit with the Minorite Monastery • in Masarykova street • originally built in the Gothic style • reconstructed into the Baroque style later • the monastery is partly used by the Church • the other part together with the garden is used by public for concerts of classical music, conferences, social events, etc. obr. 11 obr. 12

11 The Church of St Adalbert • built in the 17th century on a site of a small Gothic church • in the Baroque style, with two chapels on both sides • burnt down (1945), the altar and frescos destroyed • houses the archives • there is a Marian column in front of the church obr. 13

12 The Church of St Wenceslas with a former monastery • there is a chapel with frescos from the 14th century • the monastic buildings house the House of Arts and the Basic Art school The Church of the Holy Cross • called the Swedish chapel (used by Swedish soldiers during the Thirty Years´ War) • an octagonal shape • built of bricks in the Gothic style obr. 14

13 Parks • there are a lot of parks in Opava • the oldest and largest is the Municipal Park – founded at the end of the 18th century • a firing range used to be there • a place for relaxation, sports activities (cycling, roller- blading), playgrounds and a nearby outdoor swimming pool from 1930 Dvořák´s Park • trees as old as 120 years • an alley lined with lindens, chestnuts, maple and ash trees • a statue of Petr Bezruč obr. 15 Petr Bezruč Memorial

14 Svoboda´s Park • the main point is the fountain with the statue of New Opava • includes a hundred-year-old alley of maple trees • a very favourite place is the so-called Bird´s hill with a music pavilion • there were aviaries with birds • we can see bronze sculptures of birds there now obr. 16 the statue of New Opava

15 Křížkovský Park • named after a choirmaster, composer and conductor Pavel Křížkovský • we can see his bust below the stairs leading to the Bird´s hill Smetana´s Park • with a bust of Bedřich Smetana • leading to the Silesian Museum an information board called Get to know the trees in Opava parks obr. 17

17 The transport • there are two railway stations • we can also travel by trolley buses and buses round the town • in the past there were trams running in the town obr. 22 obr. 23 the newly reconstructed building of the railway station got the award The most beautiful railway station of the Czech Republic in 2012 the trolley bus from 1992

18 Shopping • there are a lot of super and hypermarkets in the suburbs • there are not many shops in the centre – most of them were closed or moved into the newly opened shopping centre called Breda & Weinstein obr. 22 the building of the former department store called Breda built in 1920s by an architect Bauer (it has 7 floors); at that time it was the biggest department store in the Czech Republic

19 Schools and universities • there are a lot of primary schools, two grammar schools and many secondary schools • there is also a university established in 1991 which offers various fields of study • it has 5 colleges, students can choose from bachelor's or master's degrees obr. 23 obr. 24 the main building of the university

20 Sports possibilities • ice-hockey stadium • football stadium • athletic stadium • two swimming pools – an indoor and outdoor one • volleyball, basketball, tennis, squash or badminton courts • skate park • people can do roller- blading and jogging in the Municipal Park • one can also go cycling or running along the river • nature lovers can go horse-riding

21 Culture and entertainment • there are some festivals people can visit e.g. Bezručova Opava – focusing on fine art, literature, film and music • Opava Cantat – the competition festival of choirs • Další Břehy • fans of films and drama can go to the theatre and cinema • many galleries • concerts are held in the Multifunctional Hall in the Municipal park • concerts of classical music take place in churches or the Minorite monastery

22 Famous people • J. G. Mendel – a genetics founder, studied at Opava grammar school here • Joy Adams – a writer and painter born in Opava, famous for her love for Africa (especially for wild cats) • Petr Bezruč – a Silesian poet, wrote the collection of poems called Silesian songs • Boris Rösner (an actor), born in Opava • Bohdan Sláma (a film director), born in Opava • sportsmen, such as Libor Kozák, David Moravec • and many others
