2 The special collections of historical interest Unife will preserve every evidence concerning the history of the University, as regards both the Central Government and the scientific and cultural life of Faculties, Schools, Departments and Centres. The University will keep safe and enhance the natural and cultural heritage within its competence, including scientific instruments. Indeed, article 37 of the Unife Regulation for Administration and Accounting includes the individual goods and collections of historical, archaeological and artistic interest in the special collections of historical interest. 3 The museums Museo di Paleontologia e Preistoria P. Leonardi (Paleontology and Prehistory Museum P. Leonardi) The museum was founded in 1964 as a sort of laboratory intended to complete the university classes and it is divided into 4 sections: Vertebrate paleontology, Prehistory, Invertebrate paleontology and Historical geology. It was created by the Venetian geologist and paleontologist Piero Leonardi, the first professor of Geology at the University of Ferrara. Tumiati) Even if it is a small museum when compared to the anatomy museums of other universities, Unife is proud of this institution, as a proof of the progress in medical sciences which has taken place in Ferrara since the Renaissance. The museum can be visited by prior appointment with Prof. Silvano Capitani, Head of the Human Anatomy Section.Prof. Silvano Capitani Museum descriptionMuseum description (only available in Italian) Orto Botanico (Botanic Garden) Thanks to the Reform by Pope Clement XIV, in 1771 the University of Ferrara had the chance to establish its own Botanic Garden. Nowadays the Unife Botanic Garden is still extremely helpful in teaching activities for students attending not only university courses but also secondary and primary schools. Furthermore, activities and events for all citizens are organized. The Botanic Garden is open from Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 1 pm; admission is free. 5 The archives Archivio generale (General archive) The University of Ferrara general archive is made up of the records that have been produced since 1942 by the Rectorate offices and the administrative and teaching structures (Board of Directors, Academic Senate, Faculty Councils). General Archive webpageGeneral Archive webpage (only available in Italian) Archivio storico (Historical archive) The historical archive comprises the records of the University of Ferrara dating from its foundation (1391) to 1942, when it became a State University. Carlo Savonuzzi (Carlo Savonuzzi Architect archive) The engineer and architect Carlo Savonuzzi (1897-1973) worked in Ferrara from 1922 to 1965 and became one of the most important professionals in this area. His daughter, Ms Gloria Savonuzzi, donated her fathers papers and drawings to the University of Ferrara Department of Architecture. 9 History and organisation As stated in its Statutes, Unife will keep safe and enhance the natural and cultural heritage within its competence, including historical collections and scientific instruments. Unife will preserve every evidence concerning the history of the University, as regards both the Central Government and the scientific and cultural life of Faculties, Schools, Departments and Centres. The University of Ferrara Museum and Archive System (SMA) was established in order to give arrangements for the governance of the university museums. The SMA is also in charge to coordinate and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the museums services, such as cataloguing, preserving and enhancing the natural and cultural heritage. 10 Projects Ongoing projects - Reviewing the Regulation of SMA after the approval of the new Unife Statutes - Displaying the Carlo Savonuzzi Architect private archive held by the Library of Architecture (in collaboration with the Department of Architecture) - Cataloguing the University of Ferrara museal goods within the SIGEC project, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and supported by CRUI (Conference of Italian University Rectors).SIGEC Next projects - Accreditation of the Paleontology and Prehistory Museum P. Leonardi, the Botanic Garden and the Anatomy Museum G. Tumiati by the regional authority - Creation of a Museum containing all the scientific collections of historical interest held by Unife. This museum is supposed to be hosted in the restored-to-be Palazzo Turchi di Bagno in via Ercole I dEste.
