2 Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition
Reinforcing effort enhances students' understanding between effort and achievement by addressing students' attitudes and beliefs about learning Reinforcing effort allows students to talk about how they apply effort and the results obtained. Providing recognition provides students with praise for their accomplishments related to the attainment of a goal. Students recognize one another verbally and teacher recognize students during each class period. This slide provides and overview of the purpose and goal of the category. Have Teachers work in pairs or groups to identify where Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition is referenced within the OCS Instructional Framework. After groups report out, share the next slide highlighting the connections with the Instructional Framework..

Students talk about how they apply effort and the results obtained. Students make use of effort and achievement rubrics. Charts track effort and achievement. Instructional Strategies Website Layout Launch page displays the 9 categories of instructional strategies Each category is broken into associated instructional strategies Each instructional strategy has associated tools and resources Use this slide to introduce and access the website. Model the layout of the website using Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition. Do not go into any detail of the tools at this point. Focus on the layout and navigation. The teachers will start exploring the tools on the next slide.

Have the teachers go to the website and explore each of the tools. Depending on group size, you can jigsaw the tools and assign each group or person a specific tool to explore in depth and then have them explain the tool to the larger group. 7 Providing Recognition
Evidence of Implementation Providing recognition provides students with tokens of recognition or praise for their accomplishments related to the attainment of a goal. Teachers recognize students during a class period with positive verbal comments, reward charts, tickets, etc. Student work is displayed, recognizing effort and achievement. Students recognize one another with praise. Let the group know that we are now moving into the second strategy in this category, Providing Recognition. You may want to have teachers generate their own definition of feedback and share out before showing this slide. After teachers share their definitions, review McREL’s definition of feedback with the group.

Tools and Resources AVID Claps A Job Well Done This slide provides a list of the tools and resources provided to support Providing Recognition. Have the teachers go to the website and explore each of the tools. Q: How will Strategies and Tools be rolled out on school campuses: A: IF champions will provide an overview of each strategy at the school level. IF Champions will work with school administrators to develop the rollout schedule/plan. In addition, strategies and tools will be included in the 2.5 CEU content PD that all teachers will be participating in this year. Please note that agendas and sign-in sheets must be maintained to ensure teachers are eligible for the full 2.5 CEUs.

FAQ Q: Are these the only tools that we can use for each of identified strategies? A: No, other tools may be utilized if they are aligned with the evidence of implementation for the given strategy. Q: I have an effective tool for a strategy, how can it be added to the website? A: Recommendations for additional tools/resources can be submitted for possible inclusion through the IF Champions (will be provided a submission link). Submitted tools will be vetted for alignment, copyright, etc. before being included on the website.
