1 The Arboretum at Arizona State University
Date Palm Stewardship

2 History of the Date Date palms have been cultivated for over 6000 years. 2000 year old date seed sprouted. Pictured is Elaine Solowey & Dr. Sarah Sallon in The ancient seeds were found 30 years ago during archeological excavations of King Herod’s palace on Mount Masada near the Dead Sea. Enormous forests of these palms once covered this now barren landscape. Judea had been known for the quality of its dates. They were famous throughout the Roman Empire. But when the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans the tradition was lost.
