5 PCs and File Servers: A New Paradigm The phrase “terminal/host” is used to describe computing architectures in which all data processing is performed in applications on a central host computer (almost always a mainframe or minicomputer), and the users interact with the hosted applications via dumb terminals.Terminals:can be thought of as a monitor that acts as a window to the processing being done by the host computerusually have some type of keypunch mechanism, through which the user can enter data and simple requests for the host computerdo not have any computing abilities or storage capacity, because they do not have processors or memory.Terminals resemble drive-through speakers at a fast food restaurant. You can order food, but you don’t make it and don’t control how it’s made. The speakers will also not remember that you do not like pickles, no matter how many times you say it.Disadvantage:1. Terminals do not support graphical application interfaces.2. Host applications are generally not very user-friendly. 3. Terminal/host systems are about as proprietary as you can get.4.Terminal/host vendors are not very innovative.5 Terminal/host systems are not very scalable. 6 Terminal/host systems are more sensitive to performance problems and failures than most other architectures.7. Terminal/host systems require specialized knowledge to operate.PCs and File Servers: A New Paradigmprocess data without having to schedule time on a central host computer. The PC combined the processing power of the host computer with an interface that shamed the dumb terminal…and put them both in a package that could fit on a desktop!The PC also took advantage of a new phenomenon: shrink-wrapped software. Shrink-wrapped software:Was cheapWas commonly availableCould run on computers from different vendorsEasier to create, use, and maintainBy the mid-1980s, PC users had figured out a few different ways to link their machines together over small areas, forming local area networks (LANs.)Local area networks allowed PC users to:share files on connected machines without manually exchanging disks or tape drivesshare peripherals, such as printers and scanners.Accounting data could be stored in files on a central, dedicated computer called a file server. The file server was able to download, or serve, the accounting files to the individual PCs, which would then actually process the data. The data had to be downloaded to the individual PCs each time they wanted to process the data, creating a fairly intensive transaction overhead.PC/File Server Systems Disadvantages:1. They are not scalable. 2. File server software is not very robust. 3. File server software is not very sophisticated. 4. File servers frequently utilize locking mechanisms at the file level. 5. File servers do not always have versioning capabilities.Client-Server ArchitectureClient/server is a network architecture in which each node (device) on the network is either a client or a server. Servers are powerful computers or processes (a fancy word for a program) that are dedicated to serving clients. Clients are devices (usually PCs) that are used to run applications and/or request that the servers run applications.True client/server has the following characteristics:1. Service-based. 2. Modular. 3. Resource-sharing.4. Asymmetrical. 5. Transparent. 6. Open. 7. Scalable. High-integrity.

7 Multi-tier Computing Three Common Client Configuration· If the client is used only to view an application that is hosted remotely on a server, it is known as a presentation client. Presentation clients resemble the dumb terminals in terminal/host systems in that no files can be stored locally. The application itself is not stored on the client, but it’s viewed through some type of abstract container, such as a primitive browser.· Thin clients are just a bit more advanced than presentation clients are. They offer the presentation layer, but they also allow files to be stored locally on disk drives for data entry validation. They may also provide help files and messaging capability. The thin client, like the presentation client, relies on a remote host to run all of the actual applications.· Thick clients (or, less politically correct, fat clients) have all of the capabilities of thin clients, plus they are able to actually run and manage applications locally. They have a great deal more memory than thin clients, and they may even have database engines. They are therefore more expensive than presentation and thin clients.Unlike presentation and thin clients, any upgrades or changes made to data on a remote host must be manually downloaded to the thick client. Thick clients are therefore harder to maintain than presentation and thin clients.Thick clients are best suited to situations in which the user needs fast, easy access to the data with a high level of processing speed. They are also beneficial when you will be frequently moving between applications during one computing session, or when you need to run multiple applications simultaneously. Otherwise, you should try to utilize a presentation or thin client whenever possible.
8 “2-tier,” “3-tier,” and “n-tier” “A Tier” describes how the computing workload is distributed in a client/server systemWhen you separate the application logic from the presentation and data storage layers, you create a third layer: the application logic later. So 2-tier becomes 3-tier.“n-tier” is used describe those architectures in which there is more than one application logic layerYou may also hear the terms “2-tier,” “3-tier,” and “n-tier” used to describe how the computing workload is distributed in a client/server system. These are really just more descriptive ways of explaining the client/server workload distribution.In 2-tier client/server architectures, the application logic (the rule-based processing part of a complete application) is located either on the client with the presentation layer or on the server with the actual data storage (or both.) An example of a 2-tier architecture would be a database server in which the data is stored inside the database along with the rules for how that data is to be manipulated.When you separate the application logic from the presentation and data storage layers, you create a third layer: the application logic later. So 2-tier becomes 3-tier.The term “n-tier” is used describe those architectures in which there is more than one application logic layer – the “n” being a variable that represents any number of application logic layers.Benefits of using 3-tier client/server architectures instead of 2-tier:1. You are not tied to one database. Unlike 2-tier, 3-tier client/server architectures allow you to utilize data from multiple databases within one business transaction.2. You have more communication choices. 2-tier architectures allow only synchronous, connection-oriented communications. 3-tier architectures, on the other hand, enable you to utilize a broad range of communication types, such as queued delivery, publish and subscribe, broadcast, etc.3. Your systems will be more robust. The separation of application logic and data allows you to restart or alter one aspect of the system without affecting the other. The separation also allows for more efficient troubleshooting. Both benefits result in your system having higher availability, meaning that the system can be used when needed.4. You can integrate legacy (or heritage) systems. The separation of application logic and data usually makes it possible for you to access pre-existing data storage and applications from within your client/server system, even when the legacy systems are based on outdated or proprietary standards. 3-tier systems let you access these legacy sources using special translators and conversion utilities called gateways.5. You have more hardware choices. Two-tier architectures usually only allow you to draw your data from one server, whereas 3-tier architectures let you draw your data from as many servers as you want to (within reason, your system’s memory and processing capacity will impose certain limitations).6. Better Internet support. The freedom you have in choosing communication methods and hardware support means that 3-tier systems offer better Internet support than 2-tier.7. Easier implementation of load balancing. Load balancing is a means of distributing the computing workload across a network so that no single device is overwhelmed. Load balancing is especially important for systems in which the number of clients is unpredictable. If one server starts to become overworked, the computing load will be transferred to a server that can handle the work.
9 What is Governments role in the development and operation of the Net? InternetOriginally designed as a Defense Department resource, it was expanded to educational institutions and finally to include businesses and individuals, the Internet is quickly becoming a significant communication tool in our society. From e-commerce to research to messaging and for what ever you can imagine. The Internet makes resources available that it would be impossible for any company or individual to assemble.There are many issues that have arisen with the growth of the Net. A few of these include:· What is Governments role in the development and operation of the Net?· Should (and if so, how) states be able to tax activity on the Net passing through their jurisdiction?· Can we effectively eliminate or limit access to offensive material, especially by young people?· How can we improve the security of data traveling on the Net?As the Net continues to develop, more and increasingly complex issues are sure to emerge.Intranets use much of the same technology that fuels the Internet and the World Wide Web. Intranets however, are for the internal use of a company and its employees. An intranet provides access to all data on the network from any place, in the next office or across the world. In some instances the Internet may be used as a tool to implement the Intranet – serving as a transport mechanism. The distinguishing feature, when compared to the World Wide Web, is that users outside the company will not see or have access to this information.Limited only by imagination, intranets represent a powerful tool for companies to facilitate between different users.Extranets –Extranets build on the benefits of an intranet by extending information to selected outsiders. These might be suppliers, customers, financing sources or anyone else having a legitimate need for the available data. This can be useful in improving communications between trading partners, making data available on a “real-time” as needed basis.Other characteristics and challenges of an extranet include: Multiplatform interoperability – the ability to operate with different industry standards as well as across multiple platforms.Scalability – the ability to adjust resources to the demands of the users. As more users are permitted to access the network, additional resources will be required to prevent degradation of service or system collapse.Reliability – to be effective it is important that the network be readily available when users need access. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) incorporates other areas such as Human Resources, Finance, Customer Service, Engineering etc. into the process.ERP addresses system requirements, processing architecture, relational database management systems, bandwidth requirements etc. As businesses continue to re-engineer to meet the competitive nature of the marketplace – including downsizing, this type of tool will become increasingly important to assist in making good management decisions.Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) provides a course, “Benchmarking ERP Systems”, that includes topics on forecasting, planning, budgeting and managing the enterprise. The program also deals with topics such as financial reporting, analyzing products and customers for profitability, automation of policies, procedures and controls, among others.

Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as:Recognizing input from the keyboardSending output to the display screenKeeping track of files and directories on the diskControlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printersWhether or not you are aware of it, using any software application requires that you invoke the operating system. Whether you are a user of software or a programmer, you will come to appreciate the fact that the operating system takes care of many chores automatically.Operating systems provide a software platform on top of which other programs, called application programs, can run. The application programs must be written to run on top of a particular operating system. Your choice of operating system, therefore, determines to a great extent the applications you can run. For PC’s, the most popular operating systems are DOS, OS/2, and Windows, but others are available, such as Linux.Users normally interact with the operating system through a set of commands. Some command interpreters are text oriented requiring commands to be typed in. Other command interpreters are graphically oriented and let the user communicate by pointing and clicking on an icon, an on-screen picture that represents a specific command.NOTE: Beginners generally find graphically oriented interpreters easier to use, but many skilled computer users prefer text-oriented command interpreters because they are more controlling.

15 Network Operating Systems (NOS) Single User DOS Applications:Local workstation only: not written to work on network.Network-Aware ApplicationsWill work on a network, but only for a single user.Multi-user ApplicationsApplications specifically written for networks., Scheduling, GroupwareNetwork operating system is an operating system that includes special functions for connecting computers and devices into a local-area network (LAN). Some operating systems, such as UNIX and the Mac OS, have networking functions built in.The term network operating system, however, is generally reserved for software that enhances a basic operating system by adding networking features. For example, some popular NOS's for DOS and Windows systems include Novell Netware, Artisoft's LANtastic, Microsoft LAN Manager, and Windows NT. Network Operating Systems (NOSs) have gone far beyond their roots of file and print services. Other functions, such as communications, database, application, and management services, have become equally important in corporate environments.NOS functions are implemented two ways:As a standalone operating environment that may or may not allow the support of additional services, such as database or electronic messagingAs an additional service layered upon a general-purpose operating system, such as Unix or OpenVMSFor the most part, standalone NOS environments provide the highest performance when the only requirements are file and print services. They often are less stable and robust when supporting other functions. When multifunction servers are required, layering NOS functions on a general-purpose operating system becomes the best choice.
16 Peer-to-peer is a type of network in which each workstation has equivalent capabilities and responsibilities. This differs from client/server architectures, in which some computers are dedicated to serving the others. Peer-to-peer networks are generally simpler and less expensive, but they usually do not offer the same performance under heavy loads.

19 FirewallsA firewall is a security mechanism that is designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be hardware, software, or a hybrid of both.Firewalls act as gatekeepers, sitting between the rest of the world (i.e. the Internet and other ‘foreign’ networks) and the information that resides on your private network. Like most gatekeepers, firewalls have the ability to check the traffic that comes in and out of their domain - by looking at the network equivalent of I.D. badges. The firewall owner can determine exactly how thorough the “I.D. check” should be, and configure the firewall accordingly
20 Packet FiltersThere are two main types of firewalls: packet-filters and proxy servers.Packet-FiltersA packet-filter looks at the IP headers of incoming network packets (a packet is basically just a chunk of digital data) and decides whether to accept or reject the packets based on predefined rules established by the firewall owner. The ‘predefined rules’ of which we speak tell the packet-filter what types of communications are allowed to enter and exit a given networkIf an incoming (destination) IP address is not in the list (or table) that was configured by the firewall owner, the packet will be rejected. If an outgoing packet is sent from an IP address (or source) that is not on the list, it will be rejected, and so on.Packet-filters normally reside on the router, which is the logical place for them since they are essentially just more selective, security-concerned routers. They are not able to use any information available to them beyond the information contained in the IP headers and their tables, so they are “dumb” gatekeepers. Packet-filters can be fairly effective, though less so than proxy servers. They are difficult to configure, however, and their complexity often works to create unintended security holes.
21 Proxy ServerA proxy server is the “smarter” of the two basic types of firewalls. Proxy servers run a bunch of small, trusted applications, called proxies, which act as specialized relays. A proxy server might have:· a proxy for FTP· a proxy for· a proxy for HTTP, etc.The proxy for FTP would intercept all FTP messages that enter or leave the network, the HTTP proxy would intercept all HTTP messages that enter or leave a network…and so on. Once the proxy has intercepted a message, it will transfer that data to the internal network IF (“the big if”) that message has access ‘rights.’ Proxy servers are savvier than packet-filters, however, and they can make decisions on what to let in and out based on context, etc.A packet-filter can be likened to a minimum-wage security guard, if your name is on the (IP) list, you’re in.A proxy server is more like a bouncer at a very exclusive club in which the party inside has asked not to be disturbed. The bouncer can decide to pass your message through or turn you away depending on:· when you arrive· what you look like· whether or not it thinks the party you’re trying to communicate with would want to hear what you have to say!To carry this (poor) analogy further, the inside of the club is like your internal network, and only the bouncer (proxy) is visible from the outside. In this way, the goings on inside the club (your network data and true network addresses) are kept secret from the outside world.Proxy servers are more effective than packet-filters because they have a richer security policy definition set available to them (because of their ability to examine context) and because they can hide true network addresses.That is not to say that packet-filters are worthless. In fact, packet-filters and proxy servers can be combined to provide an even greater degree of security.
22 CERTIFICATE AUTHORITIES There are four principal types of certificates:Certification AuthorityServerPersonalSoftware PublisherWhile there are differences in the functions of the types of certificates, they all rely on the matching of certain data from different sources to provide verification. The personal certificate utilizes a key pair made of a public key and a private key. These keys are created by your browser software. The private key is forwarded to the certificate authority along with different types of information depending upon the level of certificate you are requesting. Once you have obtained and installed the certificate, users having your public key can send you encrypted data that can only be opened with the corresponding private key maintained on your computer. Public keys are made available to others on-line by querying a database on the net. A user wanting to send you sensitive information would use the public key to encrypt the message before sending it to your address. Thus if the message is intercepted, no information is available to the recipient.While there are many certificate authorities, the most popular is VeriSign, the first company to offer certificates to the public.

A worm makes copies of itself and sends them to other users where the process is repeated.It’s important to remember all of these techniques will not assure that a virus or other ailment will not occur. While vendors are continuously updating their software to address new threats, hackers and other writers of problem code are developing new methods to circumvent their protection efforts. This makes it especially important to frequently update your scanning software – typically from the vendor’s web site. In addition, users need to be alert for warnings about a new danger.

While each of these services have different procedures and requirements, they all share the common goal of improving the confidence of the consumer that transactions entered into are sufficiently protected. At this time, there is no clear front runner in this area. Services that might be investigated include those provided through the AICPA and the Better Business Bureau.

Relational databases are powerful because they require few assumptions about how data is related or how it will be extracted from the database. As a result, the same database can be viewed in many different ways.In short, a RDBMS database is where data is collected for the purpose of being analyzed. A relational database has three important characteristics:1. The data is integrated into a single conceptual model and a single location2. The data is independent from the application programs3. The data is shared Today, most leading accounting software manages data almost exclusively on RDBMS technology. Every RDBMS uses some sort of structured query language (SQL) to create, maintain, and query the databaseBoth RDBMS and SQL emerged from research at IBM labs during the 1970s and from the work of Dr. E.F. Codd. The commercial realization of Cobb’s work is a database architecture that is both adaptable to change and easy to access, solving three important problems of traditional mainframe networks and hierarchical databases and of other positional file management systems.

The internal organization can affect how quickly and flexibly you can extract information. Any process that adheres to relatively rigid business rules and policies can benefit from a process-oriented workflow. The classical example of a process-oriented workflow is the loan approval process. In approving a loan, a lender follows a fairly rigid formula to determine creditworthiness. This could easily be automated using a process-oriented workflow solution. Similarly, insurance claims processing and tax preparation would benefit from the implementation of an automated, process-oriented workflow solution.Some would argue that workflow is not necessarily a collaborative activity and should therefore be thought of as a distinct technology, that it should stand apart from groupware. Workflow is increasingly being subsumed under the groupware banner, however, and we believe rightfully so.While it is technically true that workflow may not always involve collaboration, workflow solutions in the modern enterprise are usually collaborative in nature, and much is to be gained by viewing the technologies holistically. This sharing of resources can take the form of client/server – where one computer (the server) waits for another computer (the client) to contact it. An alternative to client/server is a peer-to-peer network in which each computer can act as a server or host. This distinction is becoming somewhat blurred as server become more of a “traffic cop”, directing requests for resources to the peer that can service needed.Such a structure promotes efficiency by allowing load balancing, improves collaboration among workers, improves reliability through replication and, among other things, reduces costs by sharing of resources. If we add Object Technology, we take one more step toward distributive computing. An object is composed of internal data and internal processes that receive data from an external interface, process the data and returns it to the external source using the common interface. By utilizing these concepts, a large problem can be attacked in small pieces that are easier to solve and program.When object technology is utilized with proper interfaces, the same code (program) can be shared by many processes or incorporated into larger programs, thus requiring a lower level of computer resources and a faster development of new processes.Strengths and Weaknesses of Object Request Brokers (ORB)An object request broker is a structure that allows the integration of objects into multiple programs and processes. Much like the sharing of resources in a peer-to-peer network, an ORB provides the means of sharing processes or programs across multiple applications and different computer types and platforms. A single set of code (an object) is written with an interface to a Common Object Request Broker. These objects can then be “called “ by other programs. This is accomplished by having the requesting program (client) provide the ORB with the data required by the object for proper processing. The ORB transfers the request, with necessary data, to the object. Once received by the object, processing is performed and the results passed back to the ORB for forwarding to the requesting program.Use of an ORB allows the client to utilize the object, without giving consideration as to where the object is located or the programming language used within the object.
