Design & Technology Yr 7 Resistant Materials Homework Booklet Name: Tutor Group: Technology Group: Current Level: Target Level: Homework Name:Completed Marked (Date)Improved Mood Board Product Analysis Wood Joints Tools Worksheet Heath and Safety Finishing Wood Step by Step Metals Finishing Metals Vacuum Forming Homework 1: Create a Mood Board on wooden boxes in the space provided. There should be no white spaces and pictures should overlap. You may complete this straight on the computer or cut and stick the images. Need Help??? Have a look on Moodle for an example: Design Technology>Key Stage 3>Year 8>D&T Year 8

Woods Date: H/W Design & Technology Homework 2: 1.Using the ACCESS FM titles explained below, analyse these existing Wooden Boxes in as much detail as possible. A – Aesthetics (What does the product look like? How does it open?) C – Client (Who is the product for?) C – Cost (How much do you think it would cost to buy and why?) E – Environmental (Would making this product have an effect on the planet? Why?) S – Size (How big is the product? Why?) S – Safety (Would the designer have had to take any Health and Safety issues into account when making it?) F – Function (What was the box designed to hold/Do?) M – Materials (What materials have been used in the product? Why?) A – C – E – S – F – M – A – C – E – S – F – M – A – C – E – S – F – M – A – C – E – S – F – M –

Wood Joints Date: H/W Design & Technology Homework 3: 1. Explain 2 reasons why wood joints are used in wood work. 2. Find examples of the joints that are written in the boxes and stick them in the space provided. Explain why you think that each joint was used in that particular application. Why are wood joints used??? 1.___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ 2.___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Finger JointMitre Joint Mortice and Tenon Joint Dowel Joint

Tools Worksheet Date: H/W Design & Technology Homework 4: Using the correct tool names above, write in the correct name for each tool in the space provided and a brief explanation of what each tool is used for. Name:___________ Use:_____________ __________________________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ __________________________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ Name:___________ Use:_____________ _________________ _________________ G – Clamp Tenon Saw Wood Glue Bench Hook Try Square Sand Paper Marking Gauge Chisel Vice Steel Rule Belt Sander Pillar Drill

Health and Safety Date: H/W Design & Technology Homework 5: Read through all of the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) statements. Using a pen, join up all the correct operations, with the correct PPE, Hazard and Safety Symbol required. Make sure that all your answers are clear. You could use a different pen for each. OperationPPEHazardSafety Symbol Drilling, Sanding, Welding ApronDamaged or crushed toes and feet caused by falling materials or equipment General Workshop Activities Ear DefendersLung damage from inhaled dust or fumes Handling hot / sharp materials Goggles, welding visor Damaged hearing from repetitive or continuous loud noise Using loud MachineryFace Mask, latex gloves Dust, swarf or sparks might get into eyes Sanding, Applying a finish, using adhesives Stout shoes with toe protection Burning hands/fingers when working with hot materials. Carrying or installing heavy equipment Heat-proof gloves, leather apron, full face mask etc. Clothing could be caught by tools or in machinery. Dust and chemicals can get spilt onto clothing.

Finishing Woods Date: H/W Design & Technology Homework 6: Using the computer – research and write up about the following finishes for wood. Wax, Stain, Varnish, Oil and Paint. Use the computer to layout your work both neatly and effectively so that you work looks interesting – maybe use pictures. DO NOT just copy and paste information from the internet. Please write up all information in your own words,

Step by Step Date: H/W Design & Technology Homework 7: Create a step by step for the box project. Use your making diary that you have completed in class to help with this. You should show each step as if it were a set of instructions for another student making this product. Use pictures and correct tool names in your explanations to help show each step. Make sure that all text is completed on ruled pencil guidelines and that a ruler is used wherever possible. The steps should be easy and clear to follow. Maybe get someone at home to see if they could follow your instructions too. Example

Explain the differences between each one. Draw or Print an image that supports each heading in the space beside it. 2.Complete the word search opposite – colouring each word you find in the colour of the category they fit into, Red = Ferrous, Green = Non-Ferrous and Yellow = Alloys. 10 Finishing Metals Date: H/W Design & Technology Homework 9: Once you have cast your Pewter embellishment, you have to finish it so that there are no sharp edges or rough surfaces. On the pictures above, add a number to show the order that each step would take place and add further explanation. Remember – the more detail the better. Comment on the type of file – the direction of movement and why you should complete each step in that order..
