Firstly, the NICMOS reveals many more stars than can be seen in visible wavelengths. Some of these are hidden in the gas and dust backdrop in the visible image. Every blob has a star inside it. The blob a a cloud of dust and gas held around a newborn star by its gravity. The gas and dist hide the star. The blobs, like most of the nebula, is illuminated by the trapezium stars Even the black speck has a star inside it. This is because unlike the other newborn stars, this one if much closer to us than the others. Whilst the others are illuminated by the trapezium stars, we see the black one as a silhouette. The trapezium stars are so bright that their ultra violet radiation has excavated a huge bubble inside the nebula. It has burst like a blister on the side facing us. The centre of the nebula is now a bowl shaped hollow. The radiation continues to blast the gas and dust clouds surrounding the newborn stars, giving them tails.
