1 Scientific Achievement Proved that changes at the phosphorus centers of diphenylphosphine ligands alter the size of gold clusters synthesized in solution and the fragmentation pathways of otherwise identical clusters. Significance and Impact Overturns assumptions about the influence of substitutions in cluster synthesis, a key process for building tailored materials. Research Details – Synthesized gold clusters capped with diphosphine ligands; prepared 2 solutions that differed only in the ligands used. – Electrosprayed liquids into mass spectrometer, creating positively charged ions in a gaseous stream. – Clusters synthesized using the phenyl-based ligand contained predominantly 11 gold atoms; clusters prepared using the cyclohexane-based ligand contained 9 gold atoms. – Gold clusters with the phenyl-containing ligand fragmented through the loss of gold atoms as well as activation of the phosphorus-carbon bonds of the ligands. Gold clusters with the cyclohexane ligands exhibited far less activation of the ligand. Minor Substitution Provides Insight into Designing Materials for Energy Storage and Chemical Manufacturing Johnson GE, T Priest, and J Laskin ChemPlusChem 78: DOI: /cplu Using a combination of synthesis in solution and high-resolution mass spectrometry, scientists at PNNL demonstrated that the substitution of diphosphine ligands (top: cyclohexane; bottom: phenyl) dramatically influences the size and fragmentation pathways of otherwise identical gold clusters. Work was performed at EMSL

2 How to Build a DOE Office of Science Highlight Slide Title Attention grabbing and accessible but not exaggerated Text All text should be short and to the point – minimize words and stress significance to society Scientific Achievement – 50 words or less Significance and Impact – 50 words or less Importance, relevance, or intriguing component of the finding to the field Research Involved – Address the research approach in 2-4 bullet points Give a ~175 word detailed explanation plus additional description of figure if needed in the PowerPoint Notes section Citation Full citation with all authors names is preferable

3 How to Build a DOE Office of Science Highlight Slide Institutional logo(s) Prominently display EFRC name or abbreviation Include affiliations or institutional logos Indicate institution where research was performed (if possible) Office of Science logo Figures Visually compelling figure(s) to explain the research Include legends and descriptive caption DOE has the right to use published journal images per contractual funding agreements

4 Purpose Convey current scientific and technical research results in a way that is intriguing, succinct, relevant, and easily understood by both technical and non-technical communities. Use Information can be employed and adapted for multiple uses, including meetings with other federal agencies, review committees, scientific panels, and budget meetings. Highlight text can also be a critical component of annual budget request documents that are reviewed by DOE senior leadership and Congress. Needs It is exceptionally important to convey the importance or significance the research has on the particular research field. A standard format for scientific highlights helps the Office of Science to efficiently and effectively communicate research results to the public. Why does DOE need Highlight Slides?
