What do tutors look for in written assignments? Effective Learning Service

Main Expectations of Tutors 1.Logical approach and clear structure 2.Effective use of sources 3.Sound reasoning, argument and analysis 4.Plus … ?

…and most important of all: Has the student engaged with the set topic or question? The most common fault in assignment writing is not focusing on, and engaging with, the set topic.

Exercise: You are the Tutor... In your groups, discuss the students essay answer to the question: Why is it so important to get recruitment right and what are the benefits of selecting an existing employee to a position through promotion, or selecting someone external to the organisation? Based on the assessment criteria already discussed, what grade (out of 100%) would you give to each introduction, based on those criteria ?

Essays: What your tutor is looking for That you really focus on the essay topic and dont get sidetracked by irrelevant ideas. You must answer the question. Your tutor is looking for evidence of your knowledge on the subject and that you can apply ideas to a real situation. You must bring in evidence from others theories and research to show you have read about the subject. You must reference your evidence. And you need to synthesise these ideas into your own clear, logical argument.

How can you show that youre engaged ? Theres no second chance to make a first impression... Use your essay introduction to... …show that youve grasped the key implications - through your interpretation of the question in your own words. …indicate why this topic is important. …define some key terms contained in the title (with refs) …explain briefly what the essay covers and how. …even indicate some key findings reached in the essay.

Why is it so important to get recruitment right and what are the benefits of selecting an existing employee to a position through promotion, or selecting someone external to the organisation? Recruitment is the process of generating a pool of capable people to apply for employment to an organisation (Bratton & Gold, 2003, p.239). It is an increasingly important area as organisations seek to maximise potential of human capital available to them. There are a number of benefits related to correct recruitment e.g. motivation and committed workforce providing the organisations with a competitive advantage in the industry (Bratton & Gold, 2003). The essay explores the importance of recruitment to organisations and the human resource function and identifies the benefits related to correct recruitment measures. It provides a critical analysis of hiring existing employees and compared it to external recruitment, which is the often emphasised a lot more (Redman & Wilkinson, 2009).

Tutors comments: Excellent use of literature and wider reading to analyse the question. I really enjoyed the clear structure and presentational discussion and careful analysis. You provide clear evidence and support that evidence with data and a wide range of citations. A sound conclusion that supports the summary of your arguments. Bibliography is clear and Harvard style. A well argued essay supported by data and evidence. Dr. Peter Prowse
