Overview of design

Adolescent assessment Each LSOA has around 300 children (0-15 year olds) We will recruit 60 adolescents in each area = 60 x 40 = 2400 pupils 30 11-13 year olds 30 14-16 year olds Equal distribution of males and females Assessment to take place in school classroom Combine with Accelerometer data Baseline assessment to take place now Follow up assessment in same schools in 3-4 years

The survey Home family background Physical activity Sedentary behaviour Psychological wellbeing Safety and environment Diet Creative activities Physical Health Based on standardised measures ¾ hour to fill in All pupils will get £5 voucher

Procedure Establish which schools are most likely to take pupils from LSOAs (could be up to 3 per LSOA = 3 x 40 = 120) Establish contacts with schools Ascertain which pupils at the school are from target/control LSOA areas Send out permission letters to parents Administer survey to children Recruit subsample for accelerometer assessment Send CBCL to parents (translated where necessary)

Schools time commitment Initial meeting with head or delegated staff (½ hour) Staff member to find names and addresses on database (½ hour) Meet with pupils to explain study (½ hour) Distribute permission letters (½ hour) Forward permission letters (½ hour) Meet with pupils to administer survey (1 hour) Meet with pupils to outline findings (½ hour) Total work from school = 4 hours
