USC-UCLA Rivalry By: Leigh Pitre and Christopher Vickers Documenting Rivalry in Sport
History The rivalry between the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins dates back to 1929. – However, there were no games played between 1931-35 due to the Bruins inability to field a competitive football team. The teams have played a total of 86 games. – USC owns the rivalry 46-35, with seven ties.
History The rivalry between the schools became known as the Crosstown Gauntlet, but later was renamed the Lexus Gauntlet in 2006. Among the most significant games in the rivalry include the November 1967 and December 2006 games.
November 1967 This is known as the most significant game in the USC-UCLA rivalry to many of the teams fans. In this game USC Trojans were ranked #1 and UCLA Bruins #2.
November 1967 Both teams were matched for first three quarters until Gary Baban put the Bruins up in the fourth quarter, making the score 20-14. The Trojans came back and eventually triumphed. This led USC to win the game and defeat the Indiana Hossiers in the 1968 Rose Bowl; giving the team their 6 th National Title.
December 2006 USC was on their way to the 2007 National Championship; therefore, this was a very crucial game for the team. With UCLA being humiliated by USC in the previous year by a score of 66-19, the team sought revenge for the embarrassment.
December 2006 During the game, John David Booty threw for 274 yards, but made one costly interception. – This in turn led to UCLA to triumph in the end and win 13-9, costing USC the shot at another National Championship.
