What is it? Wimbledon Championships - the oldest tennis tournament, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. Held annually in June - July, in the town of Wimbledon, London. Duration - 2 weeks.
History The tournament was first held in 1877, All England Lawn Tennis Club and croquet on the grounds near Worple Road. Competitions were held only in a single man category. In 1884 was the first time held matches in the women's singles and men's doubles. In 1913 - in the women's doubles and mixed doubles. Matches began in the new location, near Church Road, since 1922, where they are held at this present time.
Some facts The British are proud of their championship, but no one Briton was unable to win the tournament since then, as did Fred Perry in 1936. Among women, the Englishwoman won the last time in 1977, it was Virginia Wade.
