1 KEYS TO BUILDING A CHAMPIONSHIP HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

2 PROGRAM What does it take? Parents, coaches, administrators, community, and players

3 WE NOT I When communicating about the program use We not I or My –The program is not yours there are many people that will help with your program –Get more buy-in from everyone when you leave out the I word

4 Year Round Program To establish a championship program you must be all in –Summer Ball –Fall Ball –Winter Workouts –Spring Ball Create opportunities for players to get better, and the program will get better

5 FIRST STEP TO THE PROCESS What do you want your program to be known for? NON NEGOTIABLES THINGS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO HANG YOUR HAT ON NEED TO BE COMMUNICATED EACH YEAR AND THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

6 GRANDVIEW BASEBALL A.B.E. Attitudehave complete control over your attitude Will not coach a bad attitude Believein yourself, your teammates, and coaches Have to believe in yourself to have success in life Efforthave complete control over the effort you give in life PLAY HARD AND WITH CLASS

7 PARENTS Need concise expectations for parents in your program Need to be brutally honest with them They need to be informed that they are part of the program and to represent it with class

8 BOOSTER CLUB DO YOU NEED TO HAVE ONE? –Challenges Small School Low economic area Seems to be very little parent involvement –Hinkley H.S.if I knew then what I know now would have done something –Always going to find parents willing to help

9 BOOSTER CLUBS SET UP CORRECTLY IS A HUGE ASSET Clearly define the purpose of the booster club Clearly define the roles that the board members will serve Get parents of players that are good players and are going to be a part of your program until they graduate (MARC JOHNSON) DONT TOUCH THE MONEY (MARC JOHNSON)

10 COACHING STAFF Goes without saying how important your assistants are GHS staffMike Letofsky, Matt Kitashima, Cory Chandler, Wes Smock, Rick Spriggs, Jon Sanely, and Brian Callaghan Consistenttry your best to keep coaches around for long time Share your beliefs about the program LoyaltyHUGE PIECE Important role the lower levels play to prepare players for a shot at varsity baseball All coaches represent the program they need to understand this Willing to communicate to/with you and other coaches Willingness to learn

11 School Administration Need their support Communicate your expectations of the PROGRAM

12 Players Foundation of your program –What experience to you want them to have? –Communicate with them what you are looking for in a player –Rules Very few –Communicationend of season meetings? –Players that come back

13 OTHER COACHES Use other coaches to learn Dont have such an ego that you cant sit down and talk to another coach Marc Johnson, Steve Eaton, Joe White, Allan Dyer, Dave Mumper, Scott Bullock
