1 Emergency Mask (EM) Integrating MBSE Into Ongoing Projects: Requirements Validation and Test Planning for ISS SAFER, AIAA Annual Technical Symposium, May 18, 2012, G. Pierce/T. Williams

2 Emergency Mask Hardware Overview Gore hood Visor Adjustable head strap Butyl Rubber N eckdam One size fits all Seals at the neck Dual bayonet connectors accommodate either: Two Fire Cartridges Two 3M Ammonia Cartridges Emergency Mask with Fire Cartridges (Side) Exhalation port Inhalation port (2x) w/ keyed bayonet fittings Emergency Mask without Cartridges (Front) EM Design is based on heritage mask already in service with DoD… with a change in hood material to improve flammability resistance and permeation resistance, but… The hood material touches almost every interface in the mask

4 Lessons/Summary ChallengesOpportunities / Lessons Learned Integration of new tech into an existing design may be easy to characterize as a simple modifications – the devil is in the details Simple changes that touch nearly all interfaces in the design are not always simple. Clear understanding of the interfaces and how they may be affected by changes can assist in test planning and risk assessments Prototyping is essential, but prototypes can be false positives Stretch to get maximum value from the prototypes – understand your margins
