© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 3 Spec numbering scheme Find the structure in 3GPP TR Also on the web At first sight, the numbering scheme for TSs and TRs may appear chaotic. But … it is organized chaos. Spec numbers are not allocated on a per-TSG basis or on a per-WG basis, but on a functional basis. Of course, particular WGs are responsible for particular functional areas of the system, so it is possible to have a reasonable guess at the group to whom a given Spec belongs on the basis of its number.

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 4 To understand the numbering scheme, it is necessary to go back in history a while … GSM, Phase 1 to Phase 2+ Release seriesSystem requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 02.-seriesStage 1 (service requirements) 03.-seriesStage 2 (abstract architecture) 04.-seriesStage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 05.-seriesRadio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 06.-seriesCODECs 07.-seriesData communication 08.-seriesStage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 09.-seriesStage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 10.-seriesWork plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 11.-seriesSIM, terminal test specs 12.-seriesOA&M 13.-seriesEuropean regulatory test specs

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 7 In some series, almost all available numbers had been exhausted. So in the 3GPP numbering scheme, the range was increased from two digits after the dot to three: 02.xx 22.xxx So, for example, an old GSM R98 spec 02.16International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI) became, in R99, the common GSM and UMTS International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI) and does not exist in R99 and beyond.

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI) became, in R99, the common GSM and UMTS International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI) and does not exist in R99 and beyond. On the other hand 03.71LCS stage 3 divided, in R99, into separate GSM and UMTS specs 03.71LCS stage 3 and UMTS LCS stage 3 and both exist in R99.

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 9 A brief digression onto GSM spec version numbering Early drafts of specs are version0.x.x More stable drafts are version1.x.x Drafts proposed for approval are version2.x.x On approval, GSM specs became version3.x.x = Phase 1 Or version4.x.x = Phase 2 Or version5.x.x = Phase 2+ R96 Or version6.x.x = Phase 2+ R97 Or version7.x.x = Phase 2+ R98 Or version8.x.x = Phase 2+ R99

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 10 The same scheme was adopted for UMTS … Early drafts of specs are version0.x.x More stable drafts are version1.x.x Drafts proposed for approval are version2.x.x On approval, UMTS specs became version3.x.x = R99

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 11 Prior to R99, the Release of a spec could be determined simply by looking at its version number: 3.x.x = Phase 1 4.x.x = Phase 2 5.x.x = Phase 2+ R96 6.x.x = Phase 2+ R97 7.x.x = Phase 2+ R98 8.x.x = Phase 2+ R99

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 12 But in R99 GSM systems were composed of some old, single-purpose, specs such as 03.71version 8.x.x and some new, dual-purpose, specs such as version 3.x.x This made it difficult for outsiders without knowledge of this history to comprehend !

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 13 So …

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 14 For the next Release it was decided to renumber all the pure GSM specs : GSM R seriesSystem requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 02.-seriesStage 1 (service requirements) 03.-seriesStage 2 (abstract architecture) 04.-seriesStage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 05.-seriesRadio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 06.-seriesCODECs 07.-seriesData communication 08.-seriesStage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 09.-seriesStage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 10.-seriesWork plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 11.-seriesSIM, terminal test specs 12.-seriesOA&M GSM Rel seriesSystem requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 42.-seriesStage 1 (service requirements) 43.-seriesStage 2 (abstract architecture) 44.-seriesStage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 45.-seriesRadio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 46.-seriesCODECs 47.-seriesData communication 48.-seriesStage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 49.-seriesStage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 50.-seriesWork plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 51.-seriesSIM, terminal test specs 52.-seriesOA&M

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 15 And, to align with the new UMTS spec number format, an extra digit was added after the dot: 05.xx 45.0xx So, for example, an old GSM R99 spec 05.04Modulation became, in Rel-4, the (GSM-specific) Modulation and does not exist in Rel-4 and beyond.

© 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 9 16 This allowed harmonization of the version numbers: 05.04Modulationversion 8.x.x = R99 became Modulationversion 4.x.x = Rel-4 In Rel-4 (and beyond), all specs have a common version first digit: version 4.x.x version 4.x.x … and this is why it is called Release 4 !
