1 Special Education

2 The purpose of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) is to assure that all children with disabilities are provided with a free appropriate public education (FAPE) that emphasizes special education and related service designed to meet their unique needs, and to prepare them for employment and independent living skills. The IDEA is also intended to ensure that the rights of children with disabilities are protected and to assist states in providing appropriate services (M.W. LaMorte, 2008, p. 333).

3 As the parent of a child who may receive special education, you have certain rights that are guaranteed by federal law: the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Click on the following link to view the brochure that details these rights. Procedural Safeguards in Special Education

4 Replacement Courses offered: Basic Language Arts: A curriculum designed to meet the individual needs of student receiving special education services in the area of Written Expression. The curriculum focuses on mastery of essential writing skills including grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. Pacing depends solely on the ability level of each individual student. Basic Math: A curriculum designed to meet the individual needs of students receiving special education services in the area of Math. The curriculum focuses on mastery of essential Math skills. Pacing depends solely on the ability level of each individual student. Basic Reading: A curriculum designed to meet the individual needs of student receiving special education services in the area of Reading. The curriculum focuses on mastery of essential reading skills including decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Pacing depends solely on the ability level of each individual student.

5 Case Management: Writing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) which includes: Monitoring curriculum modifications and regular education accommodations Progress monitoring Measurable Annual Goals (MAGs) Ensuring that students are placed in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) in which satisfactory education can occur.

6 Transition: A coordinated set of activities designed to focus on improving the academic and functional achievement of the child with a disability to facilitate the childs movement from school to post-school activities, including postsecondary education, vocational education, integrated employment (including supported employment), continuing and adult education, adult services, independent living, or community participation.
