Tables and Equations SWBAT write equations from tables by identifying the independent and dependent variables.

Do Now 1. Jenna had w dollars in her savings account. She deposited her paycheck of $150 into her account. Then she took out $20.00 from her account to go to the movies. Which expression represents Jennas account balance after these two transactions? A)A) w + 170B) w + 130C) w – 130D) w – Which can be represented by the expression 17 – 2x? A) 17 less than twice a number x B) the difference between 17 and twice a number x C) a number x squared, subtracted from 17 D) 17 less than a number x squared 3. If y – 18 = 14, what is the value of 3(y + 5)? A) 27 B) 32C) 96D) This table shows the number of miles four friends travel to get to school. Student Distance to School (miles) Who travels the greatest distance to school? A) Andie B) HelenC) MichelleD) Troy StudentDistance To School Andie1 3/8 Helen1 2/3 Michelle1 5/9 Troy1 4/9

Vocab An independent variable is one that is not influenced by another variable. A dependent variable relies on the value of the independent variable. The independent variable goes in which represents our x value and the dependent variable comes out which represents our y value. No matter what variable is being used, it still means x and y.

4
Identifying the Independent and Dependent Variable Frank earns $8 per hour for mowing his neighbors lawn. The amount of money he earns, m, relies on the amount of hours he mows, h. The more hours he works, the more money he earns. Therefore, the dependent variable is m, the money he earns and the independent variable is h, the amount of hours he works. The amount of hours he works does not rely on the amount of money he makes.

5
Guided Practice Find the output (dependent variable) Input Output x2x

6
Tables and Equations y = x + 3 What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? xy

7
Applying to the real world The manager of Target raised the price $15 on each video game. Independent Variable? --Original Price Dependent Variable? --Price After Mark-up Can you find an equation (rule) that will satisfy the total cost of the video game if given the original price? Original PricePrice After Mark-Up x

Equations and Tables and Real Life Math! Natalie is going ice skating. The skating rink charges $6.25 per hour of skating. We will let h represent the amount of hours of skating and c represent the total cost. Write an equation to match this scenario. How much would it cost to skate for 1 hour? For 2 hours? For 3 hours? What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? 1 2 3

9
Homework Create your own scenario. Show the equation that would be used to describe your scenario. Make a chart with at least 3 values. Identify the independent and dependent variables. Graph the points from your input/output chart.
