1 Zacchaeus Big Was A Wee Little Man

2 Zacchaeus was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he;
He climbed up in the sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see. And as the Lord came walking by, He looked up in the tree. And He said, “Zacchaeus, you come down from there, For I’m going to your house today. For I’m going to your house today.”

3 Saul was head and shoulders above his peers

4 And he [Kish] had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. I Samuel 9:2

5 Saul was head and shoulders above his peers
It was assumed that Eliab (David’s brother) was to be Saul’s successor because of his stature; but such was not the case

6 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. I Samuel 16:7

7 Saul was head and shoulders above his peers
It was assumed that Eliab (David’s brother) was to be Saul’s successor because of his stature; but such was not the case Jesus warned against judging by mere appearance

8 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
John 7:24

9 Saul was head and shoulders above his peers
It was assumed that Eliab (David’s brother) was to be Saul’s successor because of his stature; but such was not the case Jesus warned against judging by mere appearance How do you suppose the Lord saw Zacchaeus?

10 It Takes A Big Man To Reach Upward

11 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho
And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. Luke 19:1-4

12 Humbling for him to climb a tree to be able to see the approaching Lord

13 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. Luke 19:2

14 Humbling for him to climb a tree to be able to see the approaching Lord
We all must reach upward to obey Heaven’s call

15 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Hebrews 3:1

16 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
II Thessalonians 2:14

17 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

18 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

19 Humbling for him to climb a tree to be able to see the approaching Lord
We all must reach upward to obey Heaven’s call We all must reach upward to be like Jesus

20 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Romans 8:28, 29

21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: I Peter 2:21

22 Humbling for him to climb a tree to be able to see the approaching Lord
We all must reach upward to obey Heaven’s call We all must reach upward to be like Jesus We all must reach upward to serve others

23 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matthew 23:11, 12

24 It Takes A Big Man To Recognize His Need For Jesus

25 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. Luke 19:5-7

26 Zacchaeus needed Jesus because he was a sinner

27 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. Luke 19:7

28 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Romans 3:10

29 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23

30 Zacchaeus needed Jesus because he was a sinner
The Pharisees failed to recognize their need for Jesus

31 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. John 9:39-41

32 Zacchaeus needed Jesus because he was a sinner
The Pharisees failed to recognize their need for Jesus Many in Zacchaeus’ place trusted in their positions and their possessions

33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? John 8:33

34 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. I Timothy 6:17-19

35 Zacchaeus needed Jesus because he was a sinner
The Pharisees failed to recognize their need for Jesus Many in Zacchaeus’ place trusted in their positions and their possessions We must trust in God and not in self

36 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Psalms 37:5

37 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Proverbs 3:5-8

38 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Luke 18:9

39 O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. Jeremiah 10:23

40 Zacchaeus needed Jesus because he was a sinner
The Pharisees failed to recognize their need for Jesus Many in Zacchaeus’ place trusted in their positions and their possessions We must trust in God and not in self Jesus is the only Source of eternal life

41 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away
Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. John 6:67-69

42 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12

43 It Takes A Big Man To Restore Ill-Gotten Gains

44 Zacchaeus was willing to restore anything he had not obtained honestly

45 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. Luke 19:8

46 Zacchaeus was willing to restore anything he had not obtained honestly
Tax collectors of his day notorious for obtaining funds unethically, especially chief tax collectors The Old Testament demanded restitution

47 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. Exodus 22:1

48 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.
II Samuel 12:6

49 If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour; Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein: Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall

50 restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found. Leviticus 6:2-4

51 If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. Ezekiel 33:15

52 Zacchaeus was willing to restore anything he had not obtained honestly
Tax collectors of his day notorious for obtaining funds unethically, especially chief tax collectors The Old Testament demanded restitution The New Testament implies it

53 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. Acts 26:19-20

54 “No man should expect mercy at the hand of God, who, having wronged his neighbor, refuses, when he has it in his power, to make restitution. Were he to weep tears of blood, both the justice and mercy of God would shut out his prayers if he make not his neighbor amends for the injury he has done him.” Adam Clarke

55 “In vain may anyone tell me he repents slandering me while he refuses to correct his false statements concerning me, or that he repents stealing my horse while he continues to ride him without my consent.” -T.W. Brents

56 It Takes A Big Man To Repent of His Sins

57 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. Luke 19:8

58 Zacchaeus showed by his willingness to make restitution that he understood repentance and realized his need to repent Jesus’ statement shows that Zacchaeus had repented

59 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:9, 10

60 Zacchaeus showed by his willingness to make restitution that he understood repentance and realized his need to repent Jesus’ statement shows that Zacchaeus had repented Repentance is a most difficult command; many are not willing to surrender their will to God

61 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not

62 obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: Romans 2:4-10

63 For ye know how that afterward, when he [Esau] would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. Hebrews 12:17
