Lesson 6: The Fall of Man Christ Connect Church (14-July-2013) Foundations of Christianity
4.6 The Fall of Man We believe that man was created by God by specific immediate act and in his image and likeness, morally upright and perfect, but fell by voluntary transgression. We believe that man was created by God by specific immediate act and in his image and likeness, morally upright and perfect, but fell by voluntary transgression. Consequently, all men are separated from original righteousness, being depraved and without spiritual life (Genesis 1:26-31; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-21).
The Creation of Man Genesis 1:3 God said Let there be light and there was light Genesis 1:26-27 26 Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
The Creation of Man Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. In His last act during creation, God took something insignificant and lowly as clay and turned it into His very masterpiece, the ultimate creative work!In His last act during creation, God took something insignificant and lowly as clay and turned it into His very masterpiece, the ultimate creative work!
The Image and Likeness of God 1)Man reflects Gods divine attributes revealed in Genesis 1 - God is personal, rational, creative, ruling over creation and holy. Man reflects these same attributes in a lesser way (in acreaturely way as theologian R.I. Parker says) 2)God gave man dominion or rulership over His creation when He declared that man would have dominion over birds, the fish, the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing (see Genesis 1:26).
The Image and Likeness of God 3) That God created man male (Adam) and female (Eve) clearly shows that He is a God of loving relationships - the Holy Trinity desires that man and woman experience intimacy and community with one another
Sin Corrupts the image of God The original created state of man: a)Morally pure b)Innocent c)Upright The moment Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit: 1)They ceased to be morally upright and innocent Genesis 3:7 Their eyes were opened and they knew that they were naked
Sin Corrupts the image of God 2) They lost their intimate relationship with God -They covered their nakedness with fig leaves (v.7) and they hid themselves from His presence (v.8) 3) Their mouths overflowed with the new reality of sin in their hearts -They didnt take any responsibility for their sin & shifted blame to each other and to the serpent (v.12-13) - their words showed dishonesty before God, betrayal of each other and blaming God Himself for their sin
Sin Corrupts the image of God Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned
Lesson 7: The Atonement Christ Connect Church (14-July-2013) Foundations of Christianity
4.7 The Atonement We believe that Gods answer to mans sinful state is in the death of his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, on the cross, whose sufferings and shed blood have made full atonement for the sins of the whole world, both original and actual, and that there is no other ground for salvation (2 Corinthians 5:18-21; Galatians 1:4; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14; Hebrews 9:25-26; 1 Peter 1:19-20).We believe that Gods answer to mans sinful state is in the death of his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, on the cross, whose sufferings and shed blood have made full atonement for the sins of the whole world, both original and actual, and that there is no other ground for salvation (2 Corinthians 5:18-21; Galatians 1:4; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14; Hebrews 9:25-26; 1 Peter 1:19-20).
Paradise is Lost God pronounced His judgment upon Adam & Eve: 1)The womans child-bearing will be accompanied by greatly multiplied pain and she would desire for her husband in trying to dominate him Genesis 3:16 To the woman He said: I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.
Paradise is Lost 2) Mans labor, which God intended to be blessed and very fruitful, will now yield hardship and trials. This lifelong struggle will end in death Genesis 3:17b-19 17 Then to Adam He said… Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.
Paradise is Lost 3) Both of them lost their direct, intimate fellowship with God. Genesis 3:23-24 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
The Proto EvangeliumThe Proto Evangelium Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel. Enmity – great conflict between good and evil Seed – refers to JesusSeed – refers to Jesus Head – means rulership. Jesus will destroy the rulership of SatanHead – means rulership. Jesus will destroy the rulership of Satan
The Proto EvangeliumThe Proto Evangelium 1 John 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God is manifested,For this purpose the Son of God is manifested, That He might destroy the works of the devil Colossians 2:15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He (Jesus) made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it (that is, the Cross)Having disarmed principalities and powers, He (Jesus) made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it (that is, the Cross)
The Precious Blood of Jesus Genesis 3:21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them. - Innocent animals were sacrificed to tunics - Substitutionary sacrifice – the innocent being judged to provide a covering for the guilty Hebrews 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
The Precious Blood of Jesus Ephesians 1:17 In Him we have redemption through His blood,In Him we have redemption through His blood, The forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 2 Corinthians 5:21 For He (God) made Him (Jesus) who know no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (Jesus) - To make peace and atonement, the innocent must be punished so that the guilty can be forgiven
The Precious Blood of Jesus 1 Peter 1:18-19 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Application 1. Faith (trusting in God) is better than knowing and learning by experience The lesson is clear – faith in what God said in His Word is indeed far better than learning and knowing for ourselves by our experience. We either choose to believe God and what He revealed to us in His word or we ignore Gods will and His word and turn to our own way and reap the consequences of our foolish choice (see Isaiah 53:6). Hab. 2:4, Rom. 1:17, Gal. 3:11, Heb. 10:38 The just shall live by faith
Application 2. Gods original plan and design for marriage is between a man and a woman Genesis 2:21-22 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. Gen. 2:24, Matt. 19:6, Mark 10:8 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Application 2. Gods original plan and design for marriage is between a man and a woman The Church continues to uphold the sanctity of marriage as between a man and a woman. In this confused and darkened world that totally rejects God and His revelation, and now increasingly promotes homosexuality as a valid lifestyle choice and homosexual marriage as a right, the Lord Jesus sayswhat God hath put together (marriage between a man and a woman) let not man put asunder (Matthew 19:6).
Application 3. To be reconciled with God doesnt require our good works or our penance Although doing good works and acts of mercy and charity are very commendable and encouraged, the Bible has cleared taught that for sinful man to be reconciled with God, he first needs to put his trust on Jesus and accept Christ into his life. We need to accept what the Bible teaches that Christs shed blood on the Cross is complete and perfect payment for our sins. This is Gods plan since the very beginning – that the innocent (Jesus) be punished so that the guilty (man) can be forgiven.
Application 4. The decisive victory Jesus won over Satan when He was crucified on the Cross and rose from the grave will be completed when in His Second Coming 2 Cor. 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ
Application 4. The decisive victory Jesus won over Satan when He was crucified on the Cross and rose from the grave will be completed when in His Second Coming Revelation 19:16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 20:10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where [a] the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. a
