4 The position is often taken that the teaching of Jesus in these passages is to be taken literally. However, the language and setting are highly figurative and the story must be seen as a parable. Virtually every scene in the story contradicts the teachings of Scriptures, and the parable was therefore intended to convey spiritual truths to the leaders of Israel.
