2 In a decision that would eventually transform the company, Algies started selling coffee to post-war Glasgow in 1950 A brief history of Matthew Algie episode one: tea Matthew Algie born in Greenock. Besides founding what would become The UKs leading independent coffee roaster, he lived to the ripe old age of 92 Matthew Algie was a grocer, marketing tea chests imported to the Clyde on Clippers Matthew Algie established his business in tea blending and wholesaling For around eighty years, and through two World Wars the business developed, selling tea and spices mainly to retailers in the Glasgow area

3 A brief history of Matthew Algie episode two: coffee The business provided tea bags, coffee and vending services to retail and catering outlets in Scotland The business went through a period of rapid expansion, going UK-wide and adding bulk-brew coffee machines for the catering sector While continuing to focus on ever- better and fresher filter coffee, we introduced the first espresso machine to our range David Williamson visited Portland, Oregon, and saw the light. He returned to restructure the company to drive the espresso revolution in the UK Algies began selling coffee machines for offices, restaurants and hotels, helping replace instant with a quality roast & ground coffee

4 A brief history of Matthew Algie episode three: espresso Espresso Warehouse was created, selling Everything but the coffee and filling a niche helping equip the growing wave of independent café bars. 1997 We launched the UK (and probably the worlds) first Triple Certified espresso: Fairtrade, organic, and Rainforest Alliance. Fairtrade certified coffees have grown to account for ~85% of Matthew Algie coffee sales – helping coffee growers build a secure future David Williamson, MD and 6 th generation owner of Matthew Algie, died suddenly, aged 42. Management of the business was taken on by the Board, led by Gary Nicol, and Matthew Algie continues to be owned by Davids family Matthew Algie introduced the UKs first Fairtrade Espresso bean 1997 2003 200420082011 Creating a product designed to emphasise the importance of freshness, Matthew Algie Launched Roast to Order

9 Ethiopia - Oromia Oromia Coffee Farmers Co-operative Union are a second level co-op with 195 member co- ops throughout the main coffee producing areas of Ethiopia with circa 200,000 member farmers We source from the Harar, Limu and Sidamo regions of Ethiopia however the majority of coffee comes from Killenso Mokonisa and Killenso Rasa in the Borena district of Southern Sidamo

26 The Brief Develop a range of three smoothie products and a marketing plan for for the 12-18 year old market Smoothies must be: –Healthy: use fresh fruit or vegetables and natural ingredients –Make sense as a range of three, offer a choice –Taste great! –Easily made in a coffee bar with a blender We also need: –Names for the products that will appeal to the target market –Recipe cards using easy to follow instructions for baristas –Nutritional information (well provide an easy to use calculator for this)

27 Your Presentation Youll work on the products and concept over the next few weeks before coming to Matthew Algie in February to present your product idea to our development team Youll need to divide into groups: –Development (develop great tasting smoothies that fit the brief) –Marketing (create a marketing strategy for cafés as to why they should take your smoothies and what the proposition is to young consumers) –Technical (working with Development youll calculate the nutritional values and develop the final recipe cards with Marketing) –Commercial Operations (youll find out where we can buy ingredients from and what the costs are, youll also help Marketing with cost info on the to look at cost / margin / selling price)
