Carbon Dioxide Sources: /Carbon-dioxide_ c.jpg

What is carbon dioxide? Chemical Formula: CO 2 Colorless and Odorless Gas Is created in nature and by humans Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes global warming 08/01/ large.jpg

Creation of CO 2 Natural processes: – Animal respiration – Ocean-atmosphere exchange – Volcanic eruptions Removal processes: – Plants – Oceans

Human Factor Electricity Natural Gas Transportation onditioningtx.com/sites /107312/digital.jpg us/table-lamp-422.jpg content/uploads/2010/06/b_02traffic.jpg * Please be aware that there is a difference between gasoline (which you use in the car) and natural gas (which you use on the stove).

More Human Facts When in balance, the total carbon dioxide emissions and removals from the entire carbon cycle are roughly equal. Human activities since the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s has drastically increased carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere. /industry/novosibirsk-industry- pic.html

Where does carbon dioxide come from? Im not sure. Lets look at these pictures to find out. Where does Carbon Dioxide come from? Last slide Courtesy of: ww.climatechoices.org.uk/present/Carbon_sources.ppt With British to American translation from:

Power stations burn coal, oil or gas to make electricity. This makes carbon dioxide. Click onto the places where the carbon dioxide comes from. Example 1 of 3 Last slide

Power stations burn coal, oil or gas to make electricity. This makes carbon dioxide. Click onto the places where the carbon dioxide comes from. Try again These are just cooling towers. The clouds are steam. Last slide Example 1 of 3

Power stations burn coal, oil or gas to make electricity. This makes carbon dioxide. Click onto the places where the carbon dioxide comes from. Excellent. The carbon dioxide comes from the boilers at the bottom of the tall chimney. NextLast slide Example 1 of 3

Last slide Example 2 of 3 People are responsible for a lot of carbon dioxide. Where does it come from?

People are responsible for a lot of carbon dioxide. Where does it come from? Excellent. Cars, trucks, and buses run on gas or diesel. They all produce carbon dioxide. Can you find any other source of carbon dioxide? End Example 2 of 3

People are responsible for a lot of carbon dioxide. Where does it come from? Yes. Heating houses and using electricity produces carbon dioxide. Can you find any other source of carbon dioxide? Last slide Example 2 of 3

Excellent. Cars, trucks, and buses run on gas or diesel. They all produce carbon dioxide. Yes. Heating houses and using electricity produces carbon dioxide. NextEnd Example 2 of 3 People are responsible for a lot of carbon dioxide. Where does it come from?

Factories use energy for heating and electricity. This causes carbon dioxide. Where does it come from? Last slide Example 3 of 3

Factories use energy for heating and electricity. This causes carbon dioxide. Where does it come from? That was too easy. Remember though, you cant see the carbon dioxide. The white clouds you can see is steam. It is also made when oil or gas burns. It was a cold day. The steam condensed into the white clouds. Last slide Example 3 of 3

Carbon dioxide comes from all these things. Think about the things you do that produce carbon dioxide. UK emissions, End presentation

Cars and trucks make carbon dioxide which is causing climate change. More on Carbon Dioxide How do they make the carbon dioxide? Courtesy of: With British to American translation from:

How do cars make carbon dioxide? Cars, trucks and buses need fuel to make them work. Where does gas and diesel come from?

Making gas and diesel Gas is made from oil. Oil is made naturally when fossilized sea creatures become buried deep underground. Oil is called a fossil fuel. The oil rig brings the liquid oil to the surface and the tanker takes it to the refinery. Oil contains lots of carbon but it is not yet carbon dioxide.

Making gas and diesel The oil refinery converts the oil into gas, diesel and other useful materials.

Tankers deliver the gas and diesel

Cars use the gas and diesel Cars and trucks have engines that burn gas or diesel. This gives the energy to move them along the road. When the gas and diesel burns, it is converted into carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide escapes out of the exhaust pipe. Carbon contained in the oil is converted into carbon dioxide gas in the air. This adds to climate change.

So burning the gas or diesel makes carbon dioxide. Take Home Message Think about ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is made by cars and trucks. End presentation

See Animation on Carbon Dioxide

How much CO 2 do you produce? Tonights homework assignment: Find out how much energy you use in transportation, natural gas, and electricity. Fill it out on the worksheet. Tomorrow, we will learn how to convert your findings into your carbon dioxide emissions.
