10 Minute Break

Recognizing and Utilizing The Gifts And Talents of Others I Corinthians 12:12, 28 12: For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 28: And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers ;

Recognizing and Utilizing The Gifts And Talents of Others A leader must recognize that everyone has the ability to do something.

Recognizing the Gifts of Others While a leader may be gifted to do some things, he is not gifted to do everything. While a leader may be gifted to do some things, he is not gifted to do everything. An effective leader realizes that he will best accomplish his goals by utilizing the gifts and talents of those with whom he surrounds himself. An effective leader realizes that he will best accomplish his goals by utilizing the gifts and talents of those with whom he surrounds himself. God has designed the church to thrive by making use of the various talents and gifts of the entire membership. God has designed the church to thrive by making use of the various talents and gifts of the entire membership.

Recognizing and utilizing the gifts of others is important because it: Helps to prevent burnout. Helps to prevent burnout. Provides options you may not previously have considered. Provides options you may not previously have considered. Allows you to utilize persons despite their socio-economic status Allows you to utilize persons despite their socio-economic status Reminds you that the church is bigger than YOU! Reminds you that the church is bigger than YOU! Allows the church to holistically meet the needs of Gods people. Allows the church to holistically meet the needs of Gods people.

Helps to prevent burnout Biblical Example: Moses Text: Exodus 18:13-27

Helps to prevent burnout 13: And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening. 14: And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? 15: And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God: 16: When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws. 17: And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

Helps to prevent burnout 18: Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. 19: Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to Godward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God: 20: And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. 21: Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

Helps to prevent burnout 22: And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee. 24: So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said. 25: And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26: And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. 27: And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

Helps to prevent burnout Points to Remember: As a leader, God does not expect you to do everything in the church. As a leader, God does not expect you to do everything in the church. Leaders must be willing to empower and trust others to aid them in meeting the needs of Gods people. Leaders must be willing to empower and trust others to aid them in meeting the needs of Gods people. A successful leader will recognize his limitations and effectively use the gifts and talents of those who serve under him. A successful leader will recognize his limitations and effectively use the gifts and talents of those who serve under him.

Allows you to utilize persons despite their socio-economic status Biblical Example: Onesimus Text: Philemon 1:1, 9-18

1: Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer, 9: Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. 10: I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: 11: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: 12: Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels: Allows you to utilize persons despite their socio-economic status

13: Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel: 14: But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. 15: For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; 16: Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? 17: If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. 18: If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; Allows you to utilize persons despite their socio-economic status

Points to Remember: God is not limited to only using those persons of a higher socio-economic status. God is not limited to only using those persons of a higher socio-economic status. Leaders must be careful to avoid the appearance of selecting persons solely based upon their socio-economic status. Leaders must be careful to avoid the appearance of selecting persons solely based upon their socio-economic status. Some of the organs you never see are vitally important to the functions of the body. (I Corinthians 12:23) Some of the organs you never see are vitally important to the functions of the body. (I Corinthians 12:23) Allows you to utilize persons despite their socio-economic status

Biblical Example: David Text: I Samuel 17:4-51 Provides options you may not previously have considered

4: And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5: And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. 6: And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders. 7: And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him. 8: And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

Provides options you may not previously have considered 9: If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. 10: And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. 11: When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. 22: And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren. 23: And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.

Provides options you may not previously have considered 24: And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid. 25: And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel. 26: And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27: And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

Provides options you may not previously have considered 28: And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 29: And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? 30: And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner. 31: And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him. 32: And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

Provides options you may not previously have considered 33: And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34: And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 35: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36: Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. 37: David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

Provides options you may not previously have considered 48: And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49: And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50: So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51: Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Points to Remember: Being a leader does not mean you have all the answers. Sometimes the best solutions to problems can be found within persons thought least likely to have answers. Being a leader does not mean you have all the answers. Sometimes the best solutions to problems can be found within persons thought least likely to have answers. You may never know what gifts and talents an individual possesses until you give them an opportunity. You may never know what gifts and talents an individual possesses until you give them an opportunity. A leader should not automatically disqualify someone from service because of age – young or old. (I Timothy 4:12 and Titus 2:2-3) A leader should not automatically disqualify someone from service because of age – young or old. (I Timothy 4:12 and Titus 2:2-3) God does not necessarily require a progression through the ranks for an individual to provide service in His kingdom. God does not necessarily require a progression through the ranks for an individual to provide service in His kingdom. Provides options you may not previously have considered

Reminds you that the church is bigger than YOU! Biblical Example: Elijah Biblical Example: Elijah Text: I Kings 19:1-18 Text: I Kings 19:1-18

Reminds you that the church is bigger than YOU! 1: And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2: Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. 3: And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. 4: But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 5: And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

Reminds you that the church is bigger than YOU! 6: And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7: And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. 8: And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. 9: And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10: And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

Reminds you that the church is bigger than YOU! 18: Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

Reminds you that the church is bigger than YOU! Points to Remember: Sometimes you can become so involved in your work for the Lord that you feel you are the only one qualified to provide service or to fill a particular position within the church. Sometimes you can become so involved in your work for the Lord that you feel you are the only one qualified to provide service or to fill a particular position within the church. God will never entrust all the gifts and talents necessary for the growth and development of the church to a single individual. God will never entrust all the gifts and talents necessary for the growth and development of the church to a single individual. No matter how gifted, talented or anointed you are, you will not live forever. No matter how gifted, talented or anointed you are, you will not live forever.

Biblical Example: The Apostles Biblical Example: The Apostles Text: Acts 6:1-7 Text: Acts 6:1-7 Allows the Church to Holistically meet the Needs of Gods People

1: And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2: Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3: Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4: But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

Allows the Church to Holistically meet the Needs of Gods People 5: And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. 7: And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Points to Remember: Leadership is not designed to make you everything to everyone. Leadership is not designed to make you everything to everyone. Although the apostles were called to preach the Word of God, they alone were not equipped to effectively meet all the needs of the early church. The apostles recognized that if they attempted to do everything, something would go lacking in the church. 50 Recognizing and Utilizing The Gifts And Talents of Others I Corinthians 12:12, 28 12: For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 28: And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
