Primary-Market Dealers A Primary Market Dealer is the first dealer to find the artist. They look for new talent and advance the careers of living artists. These dealers regularly visit artists' studios and participate in art fairs.

Private Dealers Dealers who choose to operate on an appointment-only basis are often able to serve clients on a more personalized basis. Private dealers can be distinguished from auctioneers and art consultants because they own the works of art which they show by appointment only. Not everyone gets to see these art works

Private Dealers A good dealer has a serious commitment to their areas of expertise and can advise collectors in everything from the purchase of a single work to the formation of an entire collection.

Consultants Art consultants are trained to help inexperienced collectors navigate the somewhat confusing gallery scene.

Consultants Unlike dealers, consultants do not own or hold actual works of art, but work purely on a commission basis (paid by seller or buyer - sometimes both) They can do the legwork for collectors too busy to make the rounds of galleries
