2 Football Sports Medicine Football - an inherently dangerous sport - injuries are bound to happen As the number and severity of injuries increased the need for trained medical staff increased

3 Football Sports Medicine What factors have increased the risk of injury over the years? Early 1800s no rules no pads no helmets no refs 50 players on the field Result - MANY serious injuries and deaths

4 Factors that have impacted the risk of injury The Late 1800s... rules changed in 1880 –some made the game safer and others made it more dangerous referees hired to to watch for penalties and hopefully reduce the number of injuries

5 Factors that have impacted the risk of injury The Early 1900s 1902 AMA declared football to be as hazardous as war with almost as many casualties President Roosevelt vowed to abolish football As a result of political pressure football changed dramatically in 1902 –new rules –officials introduced to the game –helmets and padding required

6 Medical Response to Changes in the Game 1950s - doctors not sympathetic to football players bed rest, crutches or canes or just stop playing Coaches and Doctors did not work well together; coaches began to discourage athletes from going to the doctor
