Integrated Access to Digital Data and Documents in the Humanities and Social Sciences BUILDING COMMUNITIES ? Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

PROGRAM ADONIS-tge is a Major Facility (Très Grand Équipement) launched by the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) open to other partners. It aims to promote integrated access to digital data and documents in the Humanities and Social Sciences. What means « Integrated access »or -Unified access- face to the extreme diversity, of disciplines, of digital objects, of various institutions, of many uses ? Face to the extreme complexity of interdiscinarity projects, even with natures sciences (health, warm climate, neuro-sciences, immigration, etc…) The key issue is the notion of Meta-portal, as a convergence of access, preservation, publications and uses …Building a E-Science or CyberInfrastructure, for SHS purpose Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

GOALS Preparing a shared, interoperable space for navigating scientific documentation at the European and international level Considering the researcher in the center of dynamic ICT cycle : producing data, preserving, publishing, re-using… Structuring a lightweight framework, involving the already existing actors (INIST, MSH network, ABES, CINES, IN2P3, Universities, Editors, Libraries, etc.) Fostering the networked community by establishing clear partnerships amongst SHS actors and research communities…Digital Humanities, digital Social sciences, Digital virtual models for cognition…. Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

Making resources and data accessible A « METAPORTAL » as an integrated platform to exising gateways Interconnecting data, metadata, but also players and services ( Cf. Cornells NSDL Project) Accessing Cultural heritage ( BNF, Museums, archives, mages holdings, etc…) Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

Making resources and data accessible Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008 Experiment FEDORA commons solution, with ATOS Consulting, INIST in access and preservation (cf. SPAR program in BNF…)

ACCESSIBILITY PRESERVING PUBLISHING META METAPORTAL Interoperability Uses Connexion Mutualisation Communication Open Archives Open access Archiving Perenniality Evaluation authenticity Secure access Collaboratives tools Uses Data access portals and services Storage portals Publishing portals Commercial Diffusion Hosting Uses Standards Annotation indexation On line colloquiol

PUBLISHING CLEO : Center for Open Electronic Publishing, developping documentary tools for a best editing value –CALENDA, In Extenso, Album des sciences, Hypothèses.org… Convergence with other editing platforms : PERSéE, CAIRN, ERUDIT ( Canada) … Acting for holdings continuity, cross references tools, citations, persistent identifier objects… Yannick Maignien OXFORD Jeudi 22 mai 2008

PUBLISHING Managing Open archives …HAL SHS ( CCSD / CNRS) Assess and promote Open Access solutions ( a study with GFII) Find a future efficient business model, both in public and private editing Promote a LARGER concept of Coyright ( or Droit d Auteur) access Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

PRESERVING Hosting, storage and perenniality of data A first experiment with IN2P3 / CINES about corpora of oral data Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

Assisting changes in uses Probably, the main purpose, the more difficult challenge: –How to be to the nearest edge of the diversity, specificity of SHS ? –And …How, to promote generic mutual solutions For instance, are they : –a social science coherent gateway (quantitatives data, statistics, and so on…)…As QUETELET network to CESSDA ? –a cultural corpora generic access for humanities data…As CLARIN? –A virtual an simulation toolbox for modeling and cognitives theories? How to assess and value science uses and publications with bibliometric tools in SHS? How to cope with high convergence between Research needs (CNRS..) and high Education specific needs ( Loi LRU in France …)? Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

Governance & management ADONIS-tge has a Steering Committee and a Scientific Council and is supported by an independent service unit UPS 2916 SupADONIS. It is managed by Yannick Maignien (director) and Benoît Habert (assistant director). Administration : Arianne Allet Communication: Claire Popineau Scientific council: Jean-Emile Tosello-Bancal, Chairman; Jean-Michel Salaün, vice-Chairman ; with Lou Burnard, …and 3 others Steering Committee : Michel Spiro, Chairman, I. De Lamberterie, …and 3 others A NetWork of 5 National Digital Data Centers, about Text, Space objects, manuscripts, Multimedia, Oral data. Among the Maison des Sciences de lHomme network With CLEO and INTD (Cnam), …for publishing strategy, With INIST and ATOS Consulting, promoting a metaportal integration, About : 2M / Year, during 6 years Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008

Conclusions Building communities ? TGE ADONIS is e-Science Infrastructure initiative for collaborative networking, towards inter-operable and mutualist solutions The future key problem : how make so-different « collaborative » physical institutions (From research and Universities) becoming digital funding partners ? Any ideas ? Thanks Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008
