No definition for Adams job as V.P. Washington knows hes setting up the job. Sets the term limits. Hamilton came in to help with the finances. Page 221 Adams becomes the next President.
Republicans nominate Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr as running mates in 1796. Thomas Pinckney-Urges voters to withhold votes from Adams. This starts to divide a nation on beliefs. French support Hamilton, and Adams bring home Monroe and sends Charles Cotesworth Pinckney who is a Federalist. The XYZ affair is a botched effort by France to get America to bribe key French officials. Americans responded.
Patriotism sparks up again. A Quasi-War with France. Naturalization Act makes it take longer to be naturalized, and President can deport those who need to be. This brings to light the question of states rights again. By the time Napoleon takes over in 1799, the Quasi- War is over. Election of 1800 leads to the 12 th Amendment-Separate ballots for President and Vice-President. 16 new Judicial seats created.
Jefferson believes that a difference in opinion does not mean a difference in principles. Wants to guide the country to yeomen farmers, and open spaces. Thought urbanization is part of societys downfall. Europeans would need the raw materials America had. Abandons some of the formality of the job. Washington city is developed. Marbury vs. Madison is a decision which shapes the courts, and future decisions. Repealed internal taxes, and takes some federal influence away.
Barbary pirates are at it…still. French and Spanish threaten Jeffersons vision. 1803 Louisiana Purchase Lewis and Clark mission is supposed to be scientific. Real mission, count French, Spanish and Native populations. Chart waterways, and open trade with the natives. Map on 233 Many of the contacts they make with the natives are positive.
Baby boom following the revolution. People move west to follow their own lives. Transportation is the problem. Not great roads, rivers are dangerous. Evangelical belief and faith in God boom in response. T.J.s beliefs on African Americans doesnt add up. States they are inferior, yet has a relationship with one of his slaves. Believes that Native Americans are not as inferior. They should be protected and could not be expected to respect citizenship.
Problems, American neutrality creates problems with both the British and the French. Creates problems with trade and shipping. Depression hits again. South had turned to cotton as its main export, and this hit hard. In 1810 War Hawks are young congressmen who campaign for war in the hopes of raising the economy. 1807 Shawnee Prophet starts to become popular, returning many to traditional native ways.
The Prophet wanted peaceful resistance, but Tecumseh was more war inclined. 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe, William Henry Harrison defeated the followers of The Prophet. The war of 1812-heaviest part is on the U.S./Canadian border. Andrew Jackson leads militia against the Creek Indians, and later against the British. Sept. 13, 1814 Francis Scott Key pens The Star- Spangled Banner as a prisoner aboard one of the ships.
The war ends strangely, but builds national confidence. Cotton mills start to revolutionize the industry. Animal furs were a great way to gain money on the interior of the U.S. Fur trading and trading posts popped up in the west. Federal Indian agents trick native people into signing over land. Created in 1794 the cotton gin revolutionized the industry. This new cotton industry revives the need for slaves.
The new American System-wanted to capitalize on the post-war effort. Create our own. Protective tariffs would make it so imports would be more expensive. Cumberland Road and Erie Canal are two transportation helpers. National market economy is starting to take shape. Started to demilitarize the area between the U.S. and Canada in 1817. 1819 got all of Florida from the Spanish.
Monroe Doctrine 1823 states that America is closed to further European colonization, and they should not interfere. Because of the Napoleonic Wars Europe needed the Americas more than ever. Opening of the west provides for people to buy on credit. In 1819 the Second Ban of the United States tightens credit and recalls loans. Creates paupers and many pieces of land are repossessed.
