using formative assessment I introduced weekly, open-book tests in statistics and research methods in 2006/07 I used two, one-hour lecture slots to teach about the topic, and then had a 30 minute, 20 question MCQ open-book test When appropriate, the statistical topic tests also included questions about SPSS output and interpretation that the students had to generate

formative assessment used weekly tests as a framework to introduce formative assessment used an hourly weekly lecture slot to ask questions (using a PRS) about a topic compared results between 2006/07 (no formative assessment) and 2007/08 (formative assessment) in 2008/09, asked students to self report on formative assessment during their weekly test

personal response system

2006/ /08 methods introduced formative assessment sessions into half the topics taught in semester 1 compared weekly test results in 2007/08 for topics with formative assessment against the weekly test results for the same topics taught in 2006/2007 without formative assessment compared weekly test results in 2007/08 for topics without formative assessment against the weekly test results for the same topics taught in 2006/2007, also without formative assessment

2006/ /08 results

0.27 SD

2008/09 methods introduced formative assessment sessions for every topic taught asked the students two questions in their weekly tests did you attend the formative session for this weeks topic? which day did you study the material for this weeks topic? did they study prior to coming to the formative session

2008/09 methods cont… Compared topics when the same students attended or didnt attend formative sessions Compared student performance between those who didnt attend a formative session with those who attended, but didnt study prior to attending, and students who prepared and attended the formative session

2008/09 results

0.27 SD

2008/09 results cont… N = 31 All over 6 tests N = 130 N = 100

2008/09 results cont… 0.38 SD 0.56 SD

conclusions formative assessment makes a big difference PRS system allows a great way to do formative assessment students need to engage fully with formative assessment in order to see the full benefits
