1 Rhetorical Device: Zeugma By: Kit Carney Bell 4

2 Zeugma Zeugma is a rhetorical device that links two or more parts of speech together by another part of speech (Harris) Can involve two nouns and an adjective, or two verbs and a noun Often called yoking, which refers to the yoke that connects oxen together

3 Types of Zeugma and Examples : Prozeugma- you mention the word being yoked before the joining of the words actually occurs (Harris) For example, Fred excelled at sports; Harvey at eating; Tom with girls. (Harris) This form of zeugma names the verb first, then connects the verb to other elements in the sentence without actually mentioning the verb again Diazeugma- you mention a subject that has many verbs: I went to school, did my homework, and watched T.V. Hypozeugma- mentioning the yoking word after the joining of the words actually ocurrs: The girl on T.V., the boy in my art class, and the inventor of the telephone are all intelligent people. You could also have a verb with several direct objects, or a preposition with two objects

4 Purpose: Helps you to make connections between words and thoughts The more connections there are, the clearer your statements will be Makes relationship between words evident
