Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 8/65 Learning Objectives for this lesson To provide an overview of physical and digital course reserve materials To provide an introduction to standard operations with physical and digital reserve materials in the library

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 9/65 After experiencing this lesson, you will… Know how to locate physical course reserve items Know how to charge and discharge these items

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 10/65 Sections of Lesson 19b This lesson has five (5) sections: §19.6 Patron request for a course reserve item §19.7 Identifying course reserves via Voyager §19.8 Accessing course reserves §19.9 Charging course reserves §19.10 Discharging course reserves Ok, lets begin …

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 11/65 §19.6 Patron request for a course reserve item

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 12/65 When a patron requests a reserve item Handling requests for course reserve items is one of the main activities at the Service Desk These requests occur throughout the semester but intensify before course tests and at the end of the semester, especially during final exams week You will need to be attentive, since many library users dont know exactly what they want

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 13/65 When a patron requests a reserve item (2/8) Library users usually request reserve materials, face to face, at the Service Desk After greeting them and asking if you can help them, try to determine what it is they are looking for Often, they will simply say Creeses notes or the EE solutions manual

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 14/65 When a patron requests a reserve item (3/8) If you know what s/he is asking for because it is a familiar item, you can simply go and get it You may already know that the item is in the reserve stacks, in a vertical file, or on the Reserve Items Returned cart But in many cases, you wont be familiar with the requested item or you are not sure what the library user wants What do you do?

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 15/65 When a patron requests a reserve item (4/8) Listen carefully to what the person says Ask them to repeat the question if necessary Confirm that it is, in fact, a reserve item that they want For instance, maybe instead of Reserves they actually want a Reference item, or want to pick up a Recalled item Because the library user may be new to the library, may not know library terminology, may not be sure how to get a reserve item, or may be a foreign student who is not fluent in English … You may have to interpret their request

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 16/65 When a patron requests a reserve item (5/8) You can do this by gently asking questions to try to determine exactly what kind of item is being sought You will need to be patient and tactful, and may need to logically detect what kind of item the person is wanting When you have confirmed that they do want a reserve item, you will always refer them to the eReserves web page (more about that in a minute )

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 17/65 When a patron requests a reserve item (6/8) Often the patron will have her/his course syllabus to refer to But sometimes a library user will bring a printout from the MountainLynx Electronic Catalog Look at the printout to confirm that the item has indeed been placed on Reserve at Evansdale Library Lets look at an example

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 18/65 When a patron requests a reserve item (7/8)

Revised TH :25 EST Created TH Lesson 19b. Course Reserve Procedures / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © by A. David Roth | Evansdale Library, West Virginia University 19/65 When a patron requests a reserve item (8/8) Ok, when you know it is a physical reserve item at Evansdale Library, and you know the call number, you can now retrieve the item from our Course Reserve shelves behind the Service Desk
