8 President Elect Luke Betts
Since joining the chapter Luke Betts has been actively involved in its leadership, first as the Membership Chair then Vice President planning the monthly meetings, now President -elect. He graduated from Oregon State University in early 2002 with a BS in Business and has worked for his current employer; Cintas Corporation for almost ten years dating back to his internship. He is currently the Western Canada and US Northwest Regions Health and Safety Coordinator for the company. In 2009 he helped guide the Portland Document Management Facility to achieve SHARP (Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program). Since that time Luke has worked with Cintas and Oregon OSHA to have all operations sign into a SHARP partnership agreement.   Luke is also an OSHA authorized General Industry Outreach Trainer. Serving as the Chapter Community Service Chair he, along with other Members Kevin Wheatcroft and Aubrey Sakaguchi, created, planned, and delivered 10 Hour OSHA training to over 100 soon to be graduating High School Students over the past two years for the Chapter.  Outside of work Luke enjoys running and has completed several marathons. A small local running team that Luke formed in the Portland area in 2007 has raised over $4100 in charitable donations for the Children’s Cancer Association and Race for the Cure.  Luke is excited to serve the chapter as the President-elect for next year.

15 ASSE KICKS OFF 10TH ANNUAL KIDS’ SAFETY-ON-THE-JOB POSTERCONTEST
The 10th annual ASSE kids’ ‘safety-on-the-job’ poster contest for kids aged 5-14 is one way ASSE and its members work to educate the public on how to be safe at work and why. The contest kicks off Sunday, September 19, and runs through Valentine’s Day, February 14, To enter, a child must be sponsored by an ASSE member. In each age group there are first, second, third and fourth place winners. The first place winners will be featured on the annual North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week poster distributed to hundreds of thousands of businesses and people worldwide all aimed at raising awareness on how to be safe at work. All poster contestants receive a prize, plus they and their families are invited to attend the annual NAOSH kick-off and poster contest awards events in Washington, D.C., on May 1-2, 2012. Children in five age groups – 1) ages 5-6; 2) ages 7-8; 3) ages 9-10; 4) ages 11-12; and 5) ages 13-14, are invited to create and submit posters no larger than 11 x 14 that best illustrate being safe at work. First place winner in each age group receives a $1,000 savings bond, Second place winner receives a $500 savings bond Third and Fourth place winners receive a $200 savings bond. 20 Treasurer Paula Jones Paula K. Jones works for SAIF Corporation
as a Senior Safety Management Consultant. She has been with SAIF Corporation since May Prior to joining SAIF, she spent three years working in the Risk Management Department for Safeway Stores, Inc. She currently works with a variety of clients including those in healthcare, retail, hospitality, restaurant, agriculture, social services, and various other industries.  She visits policy holders to thoroughly evaluate loss control and safety management processes and exposures, using a wide variety of methods and procedures and consults with the policy holder to recommend sound safety management techniques and loss control methods. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Portland State University, Safety and Health Specialist Certificate from University of Washington and the OSHA Training Institute, and has completed the ASSE  Certificate in Safety Management. Paula is both a Dale Carnegie graduate and has been a Dale Carnegie Team Leader.  Paula has been a member of the Columbia Willamette ASSE Chapter since November of 2001 and has decided to take a more active role in the organization. As a Delegate-at-Large, I would like to enhance communication of ASSE activities to members. In addition, further promote ASSE and its benefits to the health and safety community.

21 Students invited to enter safety video contest
Highlight workplace safety and win cash “Speak Up!” from the director’s chair and promote young worker safety and health in a 45-second public service announcement. High school students across Oregon are invited to enter the third annual video contest. The top three entries will take home cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500 and will earn a matching amount for their school. The Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition (O[yes]), Oregon OSHA, SAIF Corporation, American Society of Safety Engineers, the Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (CROET), and the DHS-Public Health Division are sponsoring the contest. The contest is designed to increase awareness about safety on the job for young people, with the overall theme of “Save a Friend. Work Safe.” Specific video guidelines are outlined in the contest rules. Students are encouraged to use humor, get creative, and use the message “Speak Up!” while emphasizing ways to protect themselves at work. Submissions will be judged on the following: • A teen worker health and safety message based on the concept of “Speak Up!” as the main focus of the video (See rules for more specific details) • Creativity and originality • Overall production value (video and audio quality) • Youth appeal The deadline for submissions is Feb. 1, 2012. Contest winners will be unveiled at a screening event to be announced in the spring, and winning entries will be posted on YouTube. 23 2011 Oregon Safety Professional Worksite Grant
This $2000 grant supports projects or activities that will improve workplace health and safety programs for Oregon workers. Grant Requirements: 1) may be new or an extension of an existing activity or program; 2) must focus on an Oregon workplace; 3) must include a credible project evaluation; 4) must be innovative; and 5) must have the potential to be implemented in other workplaces and industries.
