2 Figure 1 Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during the development, growth, and regeneration of hair. Through a series of interactions, dermal condensation cells and epidermal placode epithelia specify each other to form the hair follicle. During the growth phase (anagen), DP cells interact with TACs to form concentrically arranged epithelial layers that differentiate into different hair follicle structures. After catagen and telogen, mainly DP and bulge remain. DP, the organizing center, provides the platform and epithelial cells provide the biomaterial to be organized into different hair structures during the telogen-anagen transition. DP cells send signals to secondary hair germ cells to initiate hair regeneration. The multicolor depiction of the TACs, DP, and HG represents the heterogeneity of these cell populations at different cycling stages. Cp, companion layer; DC, dermal condensation; DP, dermal papilla; HG, secondary hair germ; HS, hair shaft; IRS, inner root sheath; LCP, lower proximal cup; SG, sebaceous gland; TAC, transient-amplifying cell.
