STRUCTURE OF SKIN

3 For more presentations and information visit http://www. pharmaxchange
What is liposuction? Liposuction is defined as the removal of fat from deposits beneath the skin using a hollow stainless steel tube (called a cannula) with the assistance of a powerful vacuum. Liposuction can be accomplished either with the use of general anesthesia, or with heavy or mild IV sedation, or by local anesthesia.

4 AREAS FOR LIPOSUCTION Abdomen Hips Outer thighs (saddlebags)

General procedure

7 TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION
For more presentations and information visit TECHNIQUES DRY LIPOSUCTION WET LIPOSUCTION SUPERWET LIPOSUCTION TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF FLUID INJECTED THE TECHNIQUES FOR LIPOSUCTION CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS……

8 Constituents of a fluid injection
For more presentations and information visit Constituents of a fluid injection General Anaesthesia 1litre lactated Ringer solution 1ml 1:1,000 Epinephrine 25cc 1% Xylocaine Local Anaestheitic 50cc of 1% Xylocaine 100cc of Soduim bicabonate Large Volume Liposuction Xylocaine amounts are reduced so as not to exceed the maximum recommended dose of 35mg/kg (Klein, 1990)

9 mechanisms ULTRASOUND ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION

10 SUCTION ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION
For more presentations and information visit Insertion of a small cannula It is attached to a vaccum Fat is sucked out SUCTION ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION Standard method of liposuction

12 ULTRASOUND ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION
For more presentations and information visit ULTRASOUND ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION Involves a cannula that produces ultrasonic energy. Three generations of cannula. ADVANTAGES Ability to remove large volumes of fat The ability to break up tough and fibrous fats in areas of the body Ultrasound liposuction can break up cellulite. DISADVANTAGES Takes a little longer to perform Causes tissue burns in some patients Results in seroma formation(ball like collection of fluid)

14 EXTERNAL ULTRASOUND ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION
For more presentations and information visit EXTERNAL ULTRASOUND ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION Ultrasound energy is applied from outside the body, through the skin ADVANTAGES Cause less discomfort for the patient, both during the procedure and afterwards Decreased blood loss Allow better access through scar tissue Treat larger areas DISADVANTAGES The method is still crude

15 For more presentations and information visit http://www. pharmaxchange
External ultrasound being delivered through the skin by a transducer of 1 MHz.

16 POWER ASSISTED LIpOSUCTION
For more presentations and information visit POWER ASSISTED LIpOSUCTION Uses a powerized cannula which moves through the fat tissue in a rapid motion. There are two different types of motion

17 POWER ASSISTED LIpOSUCTION
For more presentations and information visit POWER ASSISTED LIpOSUCTION ADVANTAGES No burning risks as with UAL Fibrous tissue can be easily treated DISADVANTAGES Difficult to handle

18 Laser liposuction Use of lasers with traditional liposuction methods
For more presentations and information visit Laser liposuction Use of lasers with traditional liposuction methods ADVANTAGES No problems of skin burning Also helps in skin tightening Increases the safety standards of the procedure Decreases the recovery period Extremely painless and accurate DISADVANTAGES More expensive No FDA approval

micro liposuction Removal of small areas of fat through tiny tubes and very small incisions. Performed on the face, especially the cheeks, neck, under the chin, and the jowls. Cannulas used range in diameter from 1.5mm to 6 mm in diameter.

22 Stitches Surgeon’s decision Some surgeons leave the incision open
For more presentations and information visit Stitches Surgeon’s decision Some surgeons leave the incision open Some stitch them only partially Others delay stitching Also when the fluid is draining, dressing needs to be changed often

23 CandidATE PREParATION
For more presentations and information visit CandidATE PREParATION No anticoagulants, Aspirin, Vitamin E should be taken for two weeks before the surgery. If receiving general anesthesia, and the surgery will be in the morning, fasting from midnight the night before is required. If only local anesthesia will be used, fasting is not required. Smoking must be avoided for about two months prior to surgery.

24 recovery Compression garment or Ace bandage.
For more presentations and information visit recovery Compression garment or Ace bandage. Removal of drains and sutures. Any pain is controlled by a prescription. Abation of swelling. Fading of bruising. Numbness. Resumption of normal activity. Final result.

25 For more presentations and information visit http://www. pharmaxchange
For Faster RECOVERY Drink enough water to prevent dehydration Avoid alcohol for a couple of days, both before and after surgery Avoid using ice packs or heating pads on the treated areas Postpone any submersion in water for at least a week (bathtub, swimming pool, river, etc.) If any dizziness is experienced, the patient should take it easy: stand up slowly, get some help for the shower, remove the compression garment slowly, etc.

26 Possible complications
For more presentations and information visit Possible complications Common Uncommon Bruising Swelling Scars Pain Numbness Limited mobility Allergic reaction Infection Damage to the skin Spotted appearance on the skin surface Skin necrosis Puncture of an internal organ Contour irregularities Thromboembolism and fat embolism Burns Lidocaine toxicity Fluid imbalance

For more presentations and information visit Liposuction can be done along with… Abdominoplasty With a hip, thigh or buttock lift Wrinkle removal

29 Alternatives to liposuction
For more presentations and information visit Alternatives to liposuction Change diet to lose some excess body fat. Exercise. Accept your body and appearance as it is. Use clothing or makeup to downplay or emphasize body or facial features. Ultrashape non-surgical lipolysis. Collagenase chemical lipolysis. Anti-Obesity drugs.

30 Liposuction for men? Why not?
For more presentations and information visit Liposuction for men? Why not? The procedure remains the same The patient must not be embarrassed It is more expensive Common areas of the body: Chest (Gynecomastia) Abdomen Neck Flanks
