Conclusion While applying lubricant to the threads of a bolt has little effect, lubricating the washers results in a noticeable decrease in friction. Lubricants are important for decreasing friction and wear, thus improving bolt life. Lubrication also improves consistency and can help the fastener adapt to different environments.
