4 H ISTORY AND F ACTS Early steel was made in East Africa, India, China, and Central Asia. Highly proprietary, and not producible in large quantities. The Bessemer Process, England mid 1800s was the first successful production of steel in bulk quantities. Today steel is made using Basic Oxygen Process.
