H ISTORY AND F ACTS Early steel was made in East Africa, India, China, and Central Asia. Highly proprietary, and not producible in large quantities. The Bessemer Process, England mid 1800s was the first successful production of steel in bulk quantities. Today steel is made using Basic Oxygen Process. Up to 360 tons in about 45 minutes Price of steel depends on what form it comes in. Hot rolled steel plate is about $800 per metric ton. ($0.36/lb) 1.2 x 10 6 tons in 2006. Most is recycled!
