Modesty the forgotten virtue

Modesty, the Forgotten Virtue u In the previous study, 20 statements about modesty were offered. u You were asked to determine whether these were true or false. u At the end of this series we will review those statements, in light of what we have learned. u It was stated that modesty is a not a head question, but a heart questionATTITUDE.

Modesty, the Forgotten Virtue u We all want a heart that understands the meaning, benefits and power of modesty. u We want to see and understand modesty as God does. u We must come to see being modest not only as a duty, but as a blessing and a matter of Gods grace. u We need to see modesty as one way in which we demonstrate love and faith to God.

They were both naked…and not ashamed. Why Clothes?

u Man was created and lived in the Garden w/o clothing originally (Genesis 2:21–25). u We may conclude that nakedness is not inherently evil. u God believed man & woman as created were very good (Genesis 1:31). u It is not the Bible view that the human form is ugly, inherently lewd or to be despised.

Why Clothes? u Man sinned and lost his original innocence & purity (Genesis 3:1–11). u When man sinned he was afraid, he knew guilt, he was ashamed (1 John 3:20; 4:16–18). u Awareness of his nudity was awareness of his sin (Genesis 2:25; 3:10). u Man was naked in his sin (Genesis 3:7, 10), but God clothed him in mercy and forgiveness (Genesis 3:21).

Why Clothes? u In the Bible nakedness is associated with sin and shame: u When Noah sinned he was discovered in his nakedness (Genesis 9:22). u Nakedness portrays the shame & defilement of sin (see: Isaiah 47:3; Revelation 3:18). u To be clothed is to be righteous and in covenant relation with God (Revelation 3:18; 16:15; 19:8; Ezekiel 16:8).

Why Clothes? u Why was clothing given by God to man: u First, because man has no sense of what is appropriate w/o God (Genesis 3:7, 21). u Clothing symbolizes the loss of fellowship & conveys the need of restoration (3:10, 24). u Modest clothing is necessary for the people of God in order to avoid sin (3:11; cf. Revelation 16:15).

Why Clothes? u Consider this lesson in relation to the statements made regarding modesty: 1.According to the Bible, the primary purpose of clothing is to cover the body. 2.The Bible tells Christians what style of clothing to wear. 3.Since God looks on the heart, what we wear on our bodies does not matter.
