Issue 1: August 2010 Welcome to Fusion WISE Welcome to the first edition of Fusion WISE, a monthly candidate newsletter covering OH&S, Hot Jobs, industrial relations, reminders, important updates/changes for Fusion employees and a range of other topics. Safety is not just common sense How many times do we hear in the workplace, Safety is just common sense? Well, if it were so common there would be a lot fewer injuries. Implying that safety is common sense relegates it to those areas in our life which dont require much thought or close attention. When we treat safety as common sense we make it a mindless act. A couple of factors affect something appearing to be common sense. The first is perspective. Usually when I do an incident analysis after someone has been injured or a close call is reported I am looking back on the behaviour, condition or event. From this viewpoint looking into the past we can often see things which are obvious to us that werent as obvious to the people involved. Monthly Shocker Clearly someone had not given enough thought about the gear that would be needed to fit this sign safely. Back-hoe or excavator buckets are not designed to lift people and should not be used for this purpose. Always use appropriate height access equipment with purpose-built fall protection. Stop, step back and think: do you have the right tool for the job? As with many things in life, hindsight is 20/20. With the advantage of hindsight things often seem clear because they are not clouded by the pressures and stress of the everyday workplace. A second factor that affects common sense is that common sense changes over time. The solution is to make safety a mindful behaviour, just the opposite of common sense as a mindless behaviour. We all need to be constantly aware of safety in the workplace, deliberately keeping safety in mind while we go about our day to day job tasks. As a Fusion employee if you ever see something thats unsafe you should report it to your Supervisor immediately, no matter how minor you think the issue is. If you are not happy with the outcome then make sure you speak with your Fusion representative. Most importantly if you ever receive an injury, no matter how minor, you need to report it to Fusion as well as your host employer, as soon as possible. Other duties will include general garden maintenance and using equipment such as whipper snippers, slashers and hedge trimmers. Assignment begins in September. Casual pay rate $ Slips hazards in the workplace With the high volume of rain Melbourne has experienced recently its a good time to talk about slips in the workplace. Slips occur when a persons foot loses traction with the floor. The most common causes of slips are slippery floor surfaces and inappropriate footwear. Areas such as external doorways, kitchens and toilets often have unwanted water on the floor. Outdoor areas that have frequent damp surfaces can have a moss covering which again is particularly slippery. Other examples may be steep ramps or walkways and painted concrete floors. Appropriate footwear for the work environment needs to be considered. For instance leather soled shoes will be particularly slippery in a freezer environment. Gumboots are often worn in food processing environments but can create slips hazards if they have poor grip. Whatever work environment you work in its important to ensure you have good grip from whatever footwear you are using. Fusion employees require steel capped boots for our client sites and there are a wide variety of steel capped boots with excellent grips available. If you notice any slippery surfaces in your workplace please report them to your Supervisor immediately. You may save someone a nasty injury.
