What & where is the call number? A call number is a number and letters assigned to books in the library, which allow for an organized way to shelve and locate titles. John Dewey created the Dewey Decimal System of assigning call numbers. Look at this book. The call number is 005.7 WOL The numbers are assigned based on the topic of the book, and the letters are the first three letters of the authors last name. You can find the call number on the front cover, and on the spine of the book.
