2 NOTE LOCATION OF NEW TEACHING LAB PLEASE FAMILIARISE YOURSELVES WITH NEW BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES INSTITUTE, PEARSE ST REMEMBER: BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES INSTITUTE IS STILL UNDER-CONSTRUCTION, SO PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR CONTRACTORS, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM INITIAL STEPS: TEACHING LAB IS LOCATED ON LEVEL 3 LAB NUMBER: 3.22 (WALK PAST SECURITY DESK, TAKE STAIRWELL TO LEVEL 3 & FOLLOW SIGNS ).

4 WHY THIS TALK ????? Safety Legislation & College Rules (Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005) Protect yourself and the people around you PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Fire Safety- College Procedures First-Aiders/AED Waste Disposal

5 SFNS: HEALTH AND SAFETY GENERAL BRIEFING: 4. No mobile phones allowed in laboratory! Please turn off prior to practical 2.No eating, drinking, chewing gum or applying cosmetics in the lab. 1.Smoking - College is a non-smoking area by law 3.No Lab working after alcohol or mood altering substance (s) consumption

6 5. Health Issues: Pregnancy & Nursing; Colour-Blindness, Heart arrhythmia, epilepsy, immunospression, Allergies, etc..! Inform Safety Officer in confidence as such medical conditions as they may impact on the your own personnel safety in the lab. SFNS: HEALTH AND SAFETY GENERAL BRIEFING: 6. Accident and Incident/Dangerous Occurrence reporting: mandatory legal requirement. College report form completed – contact School Safety Officer 7. All equipment malfunctions must be reported to the Staff- member in charge of a practical or to the Prep Room Technicians

7 SFNS: HEALTH AND SAFETY GENERAL BRIEFING: 8. Contamination-Trails (avoidance at all costs). Disposable gloves must NOT be worn outside of Work-Stations. [College disciplinary action maybe invoked for reinforcing this communal occupational safety standard] 9. Illness/feeling unwell during lab practical session- report to me or any staff member present in the lab 10. No open-toed shoes/flip-flops are allowed in the lab

9 FIRE SAFETY-COLLEGE PROCEDURES: If ALARM sounds: Turn off electrical/gas appliances in use Leave Building immediately by nearest exit Report directly to Assembly point: Cumberland/Sandwith St (New Building) **NEVER RE-ENTER BUILDING UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO** On DISCOVERY of Fire: Raise the alarm at break point call point Leave building quickly Inform staff member or Security on Ext 1999 ( ) Report directly to Assembly Cumberland/Sandwith St (New Building)

FIRE SAFETY-COLLEGE PROCEDURES: NOTE the location of the fire-bell, break-glass switches, fire-extinguishers, fire-blankets, electricity circuit-breaker boxes, water and gas cut-off valves in the Lab. NOTE the location of the emergency showers which can be used to douse a casualty NOTE the exit doors and escape routes out of the Lab and building

12 WASTE DISPOSAL: Please follow the Teaching Labs waste disposal routine All soft hazardous waste (gloves/tissue/paper) must be placed into a yellow CLINICAL WASTE Bag All solid hazardous waste (pipettes/yellow, blue tips) must be placed into a yellow Biohazard container on bench All sharp waste (needles) must be placed into a yellow SHARPS waste container

13 Practical Protocols generally (but not always) have a specific hazard warning advice incorporated into the text where a hazard is first encountered. PLEASE READ THROUGH YOUR PRACTICAL MANUAL PRIOR TO YOUR LAB SESSION Act on that advice before undertaking the hazardous step or handling the hazardous material or apparatus. Additional advice may be given by the Academic Staff member-in-charge, by class Technicians or by Demonstrators: PAY ATTENTION TO IT. If you are to proceed, ASK FOR HELP! FINALLY:
