Figure 1 Prior to the KDOQI (Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative) guidelines,1 various ambiguous terms were used to describe chronic kidney disease (CKD; see3). These terms and the evidence base were synthesized by the KDOQI work group into the uniform term CKD, with a precise definition and stratification of severity into 5 stages. The impact of the CKD guidelines on the National Kidney Foundation is shown in 4 major areas: awareness, screening, education, and advocacy.
